Stafford shops opening - Turning into a boom town?

It was only this sad event that made me realise that Pickup was the family name.

I had always vaguely assumed that the shop name was an allusion to record players and radios that they might sell and, completely unconnected, that Johnny Pickup was a fairly suitable nickname.

I've had a few dealings in the shop, although not so much in recent years - always extremely helpful.

I think the guy just runs the shop as a hobby these days. I'm sure he's semi retired now. I don't think I've ventured in it in about 20 years.
I went in 18 months ago when looking for a dishwasher. The place stank of cat and he wasn't that enthusiastic as a business owner to a customer being there....

There is a double fronted shop in Mill Street that has a load of washing machines etc in the window, is it actually trading or has it become a cats home, Its been there forever.
Not sure whether to have put this in the 'Cats' posting.
The company (Pickups Of Stafford Ltd) is still filing documents with Companies House. It was incorporated in November 1963. Director is George Ernest Pickup (He's 82 years old).

I’m sure that I remember someone grabbing me and dancing with me (might have been in the Grapes)…. gosh must have been about 35 years ago now.

I did laugh because it wasn’t someone that I would necessarily be attracted to, but I did never usually refuse someone a 3 minute dance. But he chucked me around and danced like there was no tomorrow.

“Blimey”, I said to my mate, “well that was unusual“

”Yeah” she said “that was Johnny Pickup”

One of my faves when visiting Bristol as documented elsewhere on here.
"Elsewhere on here" might be a topic about pubs ?
I think that it was pre the pub thread.
