Stafford to lose two late night venues

I have been informed that Stafford is to lose both the Litten Tree and Lord Nelsons over the next few months, Little Tree's last day of trading will be 14th October and Lord Nelsons will be New Years Eve or just after I believe. Grim Times.

Rumours are going about that Revolution Bars are trying to aquire the former Chicago's site though.

Used to always frequent litten tree 5 years or so ago. Now wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Stinking toilets, sticky carpets and on a fri or sat night cattle market spring to mind. Pity really - many a good nights and all that.

Seemingly closure of the Litten Tree is part of the redevelopment of the ground floor of the civic offices. The plan has been around for a long time but keeps being altered, meanwhile only temporary leases are offered on the properties. Possibly open gaps to link Staffordshire Place with the Riverside development and Tipping Street

Thanks for the info Dave

Of course it is never good if places close but both The Litten Tree & The Lord Nelson are nasty skank holes, with a number of nice pubs & eateries it baffles me why anyone would go in either. As they are closing I guess I'm not the only one who thinks this. The Litten Tree, shops along there & the car park under the Civic Centre would be loads better if the plans to open the space up go ahead. As for the Nelson, there are now loads of empty buildings along Eastgate St. These should be redeveloped to provide town centre accommodation. No point trying to flog the space as shops, there just isn't the demand & rents are ridiculous

Hasn't the Nelson been warned about under-age drinking a number of times? That could have something to do with it...

Unfortunately places like that get into a downward spiral, they charge lower prices to attract more people but then only get people with no money. Those with money don't want to be seen in a scutty pub, so they end up taking less with a slimmer profit margin.

I've never really like the litten tree, I used to drink in the nelson many years ago though. Actually, now I think about it around a decade ago. Damn!

Jade Clothing you are wrong about the ground units at the new Council buildings, first a number of them have been taken. The borough council developement is on hold for one of a couple of reasons: the leases are still running down, another development on top of the late finishing of SCC buidlings and with the M&S development is about to start would have to much impact on the area if the borough council are to start their refurb.

I'm sure you will be safe HHF - they will go to The Tavern or the old Wetherspoons instead :)
The Tavern provided one of my more memorable 'wish I'd had my camera moments'. In the entrance way, driven outside by the smoking ban, was a huddle of terrifying-looking blokes. They were accompanied by a dog that even I would have avoided. Neatly visible was a sign reading Welcome to Stafford.

Probably the same bunch I heard shouting abuse at a traffic warden and telling him to get a proper job.

I lost half a tooth in the Nelson trying to stick up for my then girlfriend, the lovely landlord trying to make out I'd provoked the "quiet" gent who assaulted me. I won't miss the place, not one bit.

As for the Tree, I heard something along the lines of the owners of it not wanting to commit to a refurb of the premises while the council are faffing about over short-term permits and such stuff, so are knocking it on the head. Would you spend a small fortune on putting fresh carpet down only to be told you're being asked to leave?
If business truly is that bad there, then it makes sense that the owners would want to get out while they can. It's just a shame they're closing up so soon, but at least people employed there have enough time to find employment this side of December. I had a few good nights back in the day, and my lady tells me the Tree actually does a smashing lunch during the day!

New businesses haven't moved to the new buildings as yet as the contractors are using them and the entrances are blocked off to finish what wasn't done in the first place. Contractors look like they will be paying for lost rent out of their own pockets.

The lease on The Nelson is up, thats why Bill and Nic are departing. The renewal cost is reportedly "fusking ridiculous".
