Stafford town centre shops - Bad shopping experience?

A few posts under my belt
I've recently made a rare trip into stafford town centre last week.I had only popped into grab some euros for my holiday .I was absolutely horrified with what I saw.this was meant to be the historic county town of stafford and what I was greeted with was a town centre not to dissimilar to Cannock. note there is no disrespect to Cannock but have you seen the state of cannock town centre ... Yes I have I work there.

After my stressful trip which involved negotiating hundreds of set of traffic lights and utter traffic chaos and then falling victim to a crime by way of the car parking charges I ventured into the town centre. I turned the first corner to be greated with some claim shop solicitor type of mess, swiftly followed by something called cash converter. I didn't know this shop sold staffy dogs but I soon realised they weren't for sale and that they were tied up outside whilst their owners were converting something into cash.mmmm

My journey continued in disbelief, the town was absolutely littered with these type of shops. Cheap pound shops, cash for gold, and empty shops everywhere. What shops were left appeared to be closing.

I heard a rumour that primark were moving into the co op when .....yes you guessed it ....it closes. Now as much as I do like to go to primark for some cheap holiday clothes, it does fit in with what Stafford appears to be striving for and primark will fit in nicely besides cash convertors and many of the pound shops. If you should hurt yourself in the rush for all those cheap clothes or get bitten by a staffy as you walk by some gold for cash shop then you can feel safe that there are plenty of accident claim shops for your consideration.I was starting to feel overdressed in my smart jeans and shoes and primark jacket. Even the staffies were looking at me in a strange way.

Then there was the guildhall shopping centre and I use the phrase shopping centre very lightly.oh my god..... this has to be the worst indoor shopping centre in the u k....period. Its ideal if you want to weigh some gold in,grab 45 packets of crisps for a quid or pick up a decades worth of birthday cards and grab a mobile phone.

Now I,m not a snob but experience tells me that all these ghastly so called shops attract a different clientel. They are candy shops for the criminal and just what we all need to shift that stolen jewellery and nicked Xbox.

I,m now beginning to see that the major stores we once had in stafford
Didn't close but they actually jumped a sinking ship. JJB, hmw,co op the list goes on. The council are left with all these empty shops and in their utter desperation they are filling them with anything that surfaces from the sewers. Yet all they are doing is shuffling the chairs on the titanic.
what appears to be the biggest shop in stafford is that jumble sale of a shop called sports direct.I think the last time I went in there I ended up catching pneumonia it was that cold. What a complete mess inside,my 6 year olds bedroom is tidier.

I work hard,I work long unsociable hours and at the end of my week I want to spend some quality time with my wife and kids ,maybe browse some shops, treat the kids and grab a meal. Quite frankly that is not going to happen in stafford. In fact I only use stafford for a few things now and one of them is the train station, which enables me to get the hell out of stafford in a speedy fashion. Where do I go you ask.....

Well stafford needs to take a leaf out of Solihull. Its no bigger than stafford but its sheer class. Its a town centre that's been overhauled, nothing fancy in fact its probably not as attractive as stafford in terms of buildings however its a shining example as to what can be done with a town centre. It has an indoor shopping centre which isn't,t that big but its absolutely class,in fact the whole town centre is littered with high quality shops like John lewis, apple store, karen millen,Kurt Geiger,French connection, Pandora, phase eight the list goes on and on and on. You will NOT see pound land, cash for nicked gold, claims this and that. Nor are there 50 mobile phone shops like stafford is trying to achieve. There are no groups of chavs hanging around,no litter and no staffies tied up outside cash converters.Instead you get families browsing the many quality shops and food outlets on offer and the whole experience leaves stafford in its dust.

Solihull has a different class of shops which ultimately attracts a different type of folk. If you haven't been then I urge you to go ,I would much prefer to spend a tenner on fuel and a few quid on a world class car park and travel 40 mins to have a lovely day out. Its a sad state of affairs when I intentionally try and avoid my town centre. A town where I've lived all my adult life. In its current state Stafford is a disgrace. Its an awful shopping experience and with the influx of these cheap tatty bargain shops its getting worse. I suggest each and every council member who can influence any change pop over to Solihull and see what can be done.I just hope the penny drops because I no longer wish to take my young family into such a dive of a place on a Saturday afternoon and have to pay for it serves up.which is very little.

It is a depressing place - Stafford town centre, but to compare it to Solihull - which I know well - is ridiculous

Solihull and surrounding areas ( minus Castle Bromwich ) are some of the wealthiest in the Midlands

Stafford is not a wealthy area by comparison - shiny shops do not create high paid jobs - High paid jobs create shiny shops

If we could all click our fingers and make Stafford a thriving town again, we would.

But it doesn't work like that, what we can do is try and support our local businesses,

We have a range of successful independent shops and restaurants,

Pastiche, The Swan, The Posthouse, Love at First Bite, Lowdes Fruit and Vege, Peccadilloes, McGregors, to name a few!

If you see this thread: http://www.staffordforum.com/xf/index.php?threads/a-small-challenge.11147/

It has some great suggestions on where to buy from independent retailers in Stafford!

Exactly, people can't spend what they don't have. The reason we have so many tat shops is because there is a market for them, otherwise they'd have closed down too. Stafford town is a little depressing, but not as depressing as the average wage.

If you made more regular trips into Stafford we wouldn't be losing so many shops. The only way to turn this around is to use what we have left or lose it.

Can you please stop associating Staffies with chavs? There are other breeds of dog that chavs have and not all staffies bite!!

You could always move to Solihul if that is more to your liking. I hear Virgin trains sell one way tickets.

Do all my shopping online so I don't have to bother, saying that I went to car phone warehouse to buy a ipad and they wouldn't sell me one without a contract which was shocking and that was a couple of months ago!!

I love Staffies, but unfortunately cotty is correct in that they are also the dog of choice for those people that think a dog somehow increases the status of the owner.

We have just moved to Stafford and to be honest the town centre is quite good compared to others - even Cannock!
Yes, there are an increasing number of shops invading our high street that we don't really want, but that is the same for every town in the country , apart from Solihull.
If the proposed new developments take place then the County town will boast all the major high street brands in new purpose designed premises. Almost like Solihull.
And I am sure if you travelled further than the Touchwood Centre and onto the High Street you would find:- Charity Shops, Banks, Estate Agents, Cash for Gold and even heaven help us second hand shops. Very much like we have here.
Having moved here we like Stafford town and the scale of the facilities it offers.

It is like everything else in this world - use it or lose it.

Perhaps you could move to Solihull if Stafford is so rubbish, it'd save the driving there?

Did the rozzers give a crime number when you reported your parking charges?

The number of vacant units in town does need to be sorted one way or another, but Stafford is no different to tens of other towns like it in suffering from the effects of the recession. Even with there being shops empty, there isn't much you can't buy in Stafford - although lots of the shops are in retail parks which have probably contributed to stuffing the town centre economy. What you can't buy locally is easier to get online.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Solihull is a lovely place to shop in but to compare it with Stafford is just ridiculous. Solihull is an extremely weathly area, Stafford is not. Saying that the Touchwood Centre is not a big shopping mall is also a stupid thing to say, it must be four times the size of the Guildhall. It also has it's mobile phone shops and cheap shops like Sports Direct and I think you will find there are just as many mobile phone shops in Solihull as there are in Stafford.

Calling the parking charges in Stafford "a crime" is pathetic. I think the parking charges aren't very expensive especially compared to Birmingham and Manchester and even Solihull. I have parked in Manchester for 5 hours before and ended up paying £14 for the privilege.

Stafford is in a bad state, we all know that, but it's a national problem which is affecting most of the country. We have to keep using our shops, despite that fact that I find it difficult to find what I want in Stafford, and hope that this recession finally ends properly and we all see some prosperity return to our town.

How nasty of you to make such a sweeping statement! What evidence do you have exactly to claim that these so called 'ghastly' shops attract criminals? There are people who use these shops and rely on them to sell items so they can buy the next meal, or they are just having a clear out and just want to sell items on. It appears to me that you are a snob, to make such judgements about people! Quite frankly I don't know why you don't just bog off to Solihull because you clearly have no respect for the people living in stafford!

Perhaps what you have to say can be summed up in your first sentence. If people perhaps used their town centres more then here is an outlandish thought - maybe they wouldn't be deteriorating??

If you think Stafford is bad then I suggest you compare to other local SIMILAR sized towns like Walsall and Dudley for example. To campare Stafford with Solihull is a bit like comparing Sedgeley with Kensington & Chelsea

A few posts under my belt
I absolutely agree with many of the responses here.yes there is a place for some of the shops mentioned.yes there are folk who need to sell stuff to get their next meal.my personnel view of these shops won't change. I think they prey on people who are in a vulnerable position and there are desperate situations out there which call for desperate measures. What is sad is seeing folk sell their belongings and in some cases sentimental items that are lost forever once they are sold.
The post was created due to my experience and I could of gone into a lot more detail of what I witnessed outside cash converters. I heard the cu** word twice followed by fu****n PR***. Followed by several large chunks of spit come from one youths mouth. Just what I wanted my young child to see.

In all honestly it was quite intimidating, and certainly not what I expected to see in stafford. I also popped into McDonalds again I was greeted by large groups of youths with bmx bikes strewn all over the floor. Again the F word reared its head on numerous occasions. I then spent the next 5 mins trying to explain to my daughter that she heard the word LOOKING as opposed to....

What I intended to say was that the sort of shops mentioned do attract a small minority which let's say can tarnish the town centre. Yes there is a place for certain shops but it appeared to me there were these pound type shops popping up everywhere. To me I think stafford has gone overkill with them. Yes they are good value and I have myself used them,I also travel to rugeley to do the weekly shop at aldi due to the rising costs.I,m certainly not well off myself and often its beans on toast in our household when its a tight month. So I,m not saying totally abolish these type of shops but let's be sensible and not flood the town centre with them. I do however despise shops like cash converters and bright house. They take advantage of folk who are in some cases desperate. The %apr is criminal and and the cash they give for items is an insult. I feel some folk are already in financial difficulty and these shops only add to their problems.

Yes I do go to Solihull and its for the very reason mentioned at the start. I don't,t want my kids to see or hear the verbal and uncouth behaviour of certain individuals. Solihull is a very pleasant experience and I feel its an example as to what can be done with a town centre. The range of shops on offer is superb for the size of the town and you can pretty much get everything.

I'm getting a bit confused with the main thrust of your argument, are you now saying that people swear less in Solihull than they do in Stafford and that this is somehow connected to the type of shops? I have seen little evidence of this, indeed I have a friend who was mugged in broad daylight in Solihull - I don't personally know of anyone who has suffered the same in Stafford.

As I say I am confused, on the one hand you seem to be saying that you pretty much detest Stafford and the cheap shops, you then say well actually I use these shops from time to time and also in an earlier post claim to have lived in Stafford all of your life which begs the question if it is really that bad why are you still here? To my knowledge we don't enforce a Royston Vasey style "you'll never leave" policy - if there is one thing Stafford has going for it it is great access to transport links, perhaps you should use them - I hear Solihull is nice.

Can't someone have a rant without people listening, erm NO, not if you share on a forum!

I lost interest as soon as i read the line 'I've recently made a rare trip into stafford town centre last week.I had only popped into grab some euros for my holiday...'

i thought, oh here we go, another (not to dissimilar to myself) saying they want everything but never want to use it types.

If it helps i'm neither with you or against you, i'm your quintessential and thus a Grade A classic type of on-the-fence voter.

good day.
