The town Christmas lights were off yesterday and again today. What gives?

The market square and tree in total darkness in the festive period. A fault?

Gives a bad impression of Stafford. Especially to those travelling in for the panto etc.

Well, Christmas is over for 2018, isn't it?? No point dragging it out over a prolonged number of days, especially if it was Boxing Day, right? I mean, the council has got to save some money somewhere, now that half the shops have closed in Stafford and there's less rent coming in, so turning off the lights until next year is the presumed sensible way to go.

You are wrong. Christmas is not Christmas Day alone. Twelve days of Xmas??? Is there not?

As for retailers?! Boxing Day pretty important?!? Foot fall needed for the town?!? Encouraged by the feel of it still being festive?

If they want to save money then lighting up in November less important? Reduce lighting hours then.

The town hosts Xmas Parties, Panto and NYE Eve parties throughout the festive period (please note the term festive “period”).

I am more inclined to think they have a fault. Not a conscious decision to switch them off. Or hope.

    Merry Christmas.

The lights should be linked to a coin operation. If the public want the lights on, then they will need to stand there and feed the meter. Problem solved.

Perhaps the lights are powered by an extension lead from the Bank House Wine Bar and only operate when they feel like it.

As funny as that is. In reality it further backs up Stafford current and it’s ever increasing “ghost town” status. In darkness. Boxing Day. On festive evenings out.

    They are not helping themselves.

Sorry the reality is that most people probably don't share your concern... That said the link to the Bank House Restaurant is a credible one....

Christmastime used to be the period from Christmas Day (possibly Christmas Eve) through New Year to Epiphany.

These days, it seems to be the time before Christmas Day.

Even the "Sales" now occur largely in Advent.

They may feel that the tree has served its purpose now?

I was only making an assumption. Most people agree that the tree has had its day for this year so why waste money lighting it or the street up? I know people who take their trees and lights down on Boxing Day as they want a fresh start for the New Year. Staffordshire Council may feel the same way.

Lights now back on thanks to my 50p in the meter. Don't all thank me at once.

Most people? Source? I think most people have their trees up and SOME people take them down.

Household decoration and town/retail totally different argument.

As the lights are on. They clearly don’t agree.

Just got their timers screwed. Maybe.

    Thanks for the debate!
