I drove through Germany in 2015 and had to contend with a few roadworks. There was a warning sign about 1/2 kilometre from the roadworks, then the coned off roadworks and then a sign to say they had ended. There was minimum disruption before and after with none of the massively extended drive into and drive out of the roadworks section. Every time, we were through the roadworks in a reasonable time with minimum disruption. Everyone, and I mean everyone, kept to the designated speed limit through the roadworks.

Ever since, I have wondered why this country has such a love of long drawn-out roadworks.

Similar experience driving in Germany. For example (and this is a few decades ago) roadworks on the Autobahn were worked on day and night to get them finished. Yet I often see roadworks on our motorways only happening during daytime, just lights and cones scattered about at night. (Although there's no expense spared for fully automated speed cameras in the dark hours of the night on these sites.)

I note that the Shell garage is still closed - and fenced off - this precludes pedestrians from using the high ground in the forecourt during high tides in Sandon Pool. Walking down that side of the road is currently very difficult...

I also note that there is still no effort apparent to resolve the ridiculous sump on Gaol Square. Someone in an Astra that the cops now have the number of made a clear decision to soak a load of schoolkids there about an hour ago.

If you do find a drain plug whatever you do, don't remove it … it'll just let more water in.

What are the chances of lane closures, 5-mile tailback and a vehicle fire on the M6 today?

The M6 is at a standstill this morning following a number of incidents.
The motorway is closed southbound at J14 A34 (Stafford North) and there is reported to be nine miles of queueing traffic after a lorry shed its load of cleaning products.
The issues on the M6 are causing serious disruption to surrounding areas including Meaford, Stone and Stafford.
Traffic monitoring system INRIX reports there are diversions in place via the exit and entry slip roads but traffic is taking well over an hour to reach this diversion point.
Northbound there is one closed and queueing traffic for eight miles due to a lorry fire from J14 A34 (Stafford North) to J15 A500 D Road (Stoke-On-Trent). Travel time is 35 minutes.
