Stench from the Newport Road landfill site

Has anybody on here yet complained to SBC about the nauseating smell that's been coming off the landfill site on the Newport Road next to the castle since the warm weather arrived? Several times now I've been waiting at the Newport Rd/Sundown drive lights and thought 'that's really vile' before driving off. I had thought to say something about it but haven't, reasoning that people in the houses nearby must surely have done so already. Mind you, it's a wonder to me that permission was granted in the first place for a landfill site just the other side of a small road from a residential area. Any thoughts?

Erm, what landfill site on the newport road?

As far as I am aware that is a Golf Course development! How did you find out it was a landfill site? And when?

I have relatives who live nearby who had no idea it was no longer going to be a golf course.

As far as I can recall, they were given permission to dump landfill there as part of the golf course 'extension' development. Building up the ground, which in that field slopes away steeply towards the motorway. Which is of course a nice little earner for the golf course. When it started I was concerned about what exactly they were going to allow to be placed there, thinking of industrial nasties disguised as something innocuous, but failed to find any mention of it in the planning permission part of the SBC site. Was also wondering whether they were going to be required to reinstate the hedgerow that was needlessly grubbed up along the Newport Road - evidently not. Then forgot about it until the smell began to assert itself this summer. Clearly, there's organic material going in there - the smell of a ripe rubbish tip is quite unmistakable.

I live just up the way from the lights on Sundown and it does pong a bit to say the least
I was lead to understand all that would be going in there was building rubble, ok i know even that can have an aroma but whats coming off there does smell very ripe indeed

Maryland have you complained?
No, haven't. I don't live down that way, just notice it and wonder, not for the first time, why Things are got away with in Stafford that wouldn't be tolerated elsewhere. No objective proof of that either, just many years of observing what happens here, and listening to what people say in this small town.

If anybody fancies wading through the shite associated with the site -
07/08083/FUL
- bung that in the SBC planning pages.

The reference to 'inert' materials only to be dumped are quite clearly there in the original application documents. I have been told that the EA have rubber stamped the dumping of 'sludge cake' from STW on the site - it doesn't smell particularly inert, does it?

Allegedly.

Ah the typical Stafford conspiracy theory and leave to someone else attitude. First off who is to say anybody is getting away with anything, secondly if you do not like it report it its very easy. Putting it on a forum is unlikely to get you far.

That sounds like a conspiracy theory to me.

It has been reported - to the best of my knowledge by several people.

There are a lot of documents associated with the application, i have looked through a fair few but there are labyrinthine references to Table x in Paragraph y of Regulation z that make it something of a ball-ache to the non-wonk.

Thanks for your concern, though.

Plus, Gareth, i'm guessing you don't live up Western Downs way?

If the folk up there don't like it, they can report it as much as they want - it won't stop the stink, it's already there. And it does stink. Badly.

It is difficult to believe it does not stink in more ways than one.

I live rowley bank area and last few days when yhe wind is blowing in my direction the house smells like dog shit. Not good having to keep your windows closed in this weather.didnt know where it was coming from but makes complete sense that its the landfill by the castle. If it keeps up I wouldnt mind someone taking a load to faulty towers and dumping it in their air conditioning ducting.

You're going to be categorised as a conspiracy theorist if you're not careful.

The question is, will the council take any notice of this great stink? Anywhere else they would have been straight round to investigate, but here they're all too preoccupied with congratulating themselves about a new Primark store.

Haven't smelt it myself, but I think DEFRA (environment agency) are the people I'd be voicing my concerns through. I'm pretty sure that dealing with such things is within their remit and will get a better response than the council. As with anything the more people that make complaint the more attention it should get & keep on to them until it is dealt with satisfactorily.

Was at the in-laws today at castlefields and the stench of dog shit was also filling their house. The moment you step outside it hits you. Im used to the usual smells from muck spreading but this is somethjng else. It honestly smells like a dog has crept into your house and laid a steaming turd in each room that has an open window. Absolutley vile.
