It's an old building, some leather sofa's in the lounge area, and a nice resteraunt area, old wooden floors with nice old rugs, for you blokes out there, the barmaid has dreads! and for the ladies, the bar man was good looking.

The Swan was bought by a Wolverhampton family some 4 or 5 years ago and they spent some money making it into a stylish and happy place to eat and drink

They made it a no smoking venue a good year or so before the law came into place and provided excellent service

Sadly, they did such a good job that they sold it on to a large pub owning company ( I believe ) and the product and service dipped. They also seemed to aim at a less well off market by introducing offers like 1 penny sweet menus.

All this put me off it so I have not returned , however, I am glad to hear you had a good experience and may be tempted back for a looksee

I managed to find the Hand and Cleaver again last night ( Ranton, 5 miles from Stafford ) new signage helped. Had a wonderful sea bass with risotto . Excellent. I was also given a tour of the new veg and herb garden ( extensive ) The have a large beer garden too .

don't mention the blinds
Sea Bass, yes . Risotto , yes. Beer Garden, yes. But i'm sorry i have to draw the line at 'garden tours' free or otherwise. I have far more important things to do such as .... erm, sitting around doing nothing......

I wonder mr basil ( herb garden ) if you have ever seen a beer garden? growing pots of beer is a very skilled job

Handled glasses are the only way with our climate I am informed

You might be interested to know that this place has recently changed hands (again) and is MUCH better than of late. It still does a good carvery (vegetarians just need to make themselves known for a nut roast alternative to the meat, roasts and Yorkshires not cooked in animal fat) but now the bar meals are decent quality and at a sensible price. We hadn't been for ages after a series of disappointing meals but gave it a try a couple of weeks ago having moved home and failed to find where we had packed the food. The staff were lovely, it was fairly busy and the food fine - they've stopped trying to compete with The Fox and are concentrating on good pub food that is realistically priced. Worth a visit if you are passing between Eccleshall and Newport.
