Talk to me about a HiFi

So our ridiculously expensive Radio/CD player (purchased pre children) has packed up :(

It was pretty awesome though now very dated and is an extravagance too far to replace.

Speakers are good still (I think) so I could do with something compatible, they just have two exposed copper wires going into ports at the back, I'm sure there is a technical term but I couldn't tell you what it was. I need DAB, Bluetooth and a CD player, may as well modernise as we replace.

Sound quality is more important than looks but something easy on the eye would be nice. Not too fussed on the size though old one had pride of place on the sideboard and was a bit of a feature of the room and I wouldn't really want something I'd want to hide away.

Hubby is the musically appreciative one so this is not my area of expertise at all, I probably couldn't tell you the difference between a £20 radio and a £2000 one. Due to a recent house move and the optimistic list of Christmas demands given to us by the small people in our family, budget is around £100, any recommendations to get the best for the money would be greatly appreciated.

If the whole thing has 'stopped', it may just be a power supply issue and could be fixable...?

It can be worth searching the net for a direct replacement, some good old stuff can be perceived as almost worthless now.

It's been on its way out for a while, the radio part went first and now the cd drawer wont stay closed, it's over 10 years old and has served us well but I think it may now be time to give up. It also doesn't do half the things a modern version is capable of and now most of our music is on our phones we could do with the Bluetooth connection.

I had a fabulous Denon system, Made in Japan, proper nice bit of vintage kit, but the laser went on the CD player, so I gave the amp, the cd bit and the tuner to a friend for free. My god do I regret that decision!!!! :( The Denon upgrade I bought is made in China, and nowhere near the quality of the system I had. Further, the amp/tuner on the new one doesn't support phono so I can't add my record deck on to it, which I could with the old one :( I don't know what make your system is, but alot of them are really holding their value so might be worth repairing if it's a really good make? All I'm saying is don't be too quick to throw your old one as the modern ones are trash quality in comparison, all made for the disposable society and not built to last.

Around 2 year ago Richer sounds were marketing a "network tuner" I think it was a Yamaha RN500 basically a 160w amp with built in network tuner which is able to play internet radio stations and spotify as well as supporting things like apple airplay. I decided it was time to get with the modern era and decided to take the plunge.
It took me a while to get around investigate the streaming side and download the app. Initially I could not even find the amp listed but saw lots of amps titled demo. I figured ok I will click on a demo amp and see what the software offers... Imagine my surprise when I saw the name of the bottom left icon, I stil don't know what the full text was and I'm not sure I want to know.

I knew somebody who had an ITT cassette player and you could tape off the radio if you pressed two buttons down at once but you had to press one other button just before the DJ started talking

I've recently bought one of these although it was £50 cheaper when I got it. It's basically a blluetooth speaker with USB port, I load my music onto a USB at the computer and shove it in the back. I'm quite particular about sound quality and this is the most impressive sounding home audio item I've ever owned. No distortion even at top volume, seriously impressive bass and it packs so much punch I even hire it out for kids parties in village halls etc along with a simple disco lighting stand.

Of course, the downside is that it has no radio or CD player etc. This doesn't bother me as it's all MP3's and phone apps these days anyway.
