English Electric Lightning!
There was a Lightning simulator at Akrotiri, made from the front of an engine fire casualty. The projector for the image in front of the windscreen was a three-colour spinning disc arrangement - along the lines of the Baird system - the only use of this system in a colour context that I am aware of. I had a couple of goes in it and flew it successfully through a tree after a failed approach..
Sounds an interesting contraption!!

It was - presumably it's scrapped now. The fuselage was mounted on jacks, although it didn't move very far, not like the real modern airliner simulators, but enough to give you an impression. The canopy was blacked out, apart from the front panel, and you really did feel your life was threatened. By means of a control desk beside it, various emergencies could be simulated - engine failures, fires, that sort of thing. There was a large model landscape on a hangar wall with a travelling camera that mimicked the flight path and attitude, which was then projected onto the screen in front. It had a distinctly 'home-made' look about it, but I presume that there may have been some industry involvement. It wasn't new when I saw it at the end of the '60s.

I wonder if this is the remains of it - http://www.culture24.org.uk/history+%26+heritage/war+%26+conflict/modern+conflict/art80842 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stAe4GLZZQQ

Oh, it seems that there was more than just the one - this is the control panel of the one at Leconfield

And it seems that Binbrook had one, as well.
