Just read on the thread; 'New shops / businesses opening in Stafford' that Peacock are opening up again in town, are they too being forced out by the Co-op at Wildwood along with the Newsagents?

Ali is asking that people write to John Maltby Co op president, and Martin Cheatle, Chief executive at Central England Co-Op Ltd, Central House, Hermes Road, Lichfield, Staffs WS13 6RH

He is devastated. They told him he could have the lease for 10 years. He put £80,000 into the business, buying it as a going concern and cabinets etc.
The Co op are not even buying him out so that money is lost and therefore he can't start up again somewhere else.

You could also email them:-

Martin.Cheatle@centralengland.coop

Anyone here that has complained need to do the following things (obvious I know) DO NOT shop here again and email the relevant people, easy!

Though convenience will always shine through, unfortunately.

I just hope they don't decide to open a Co-op pharmacy, forcing Ash and his staff in Durans chemist out.

That is very unlikely to happen. You can't just go out and open a pharmacy. You have to got through a lot of process during which all the other parmacies are notified of the proposal and can object. It is a restricted trade.
It is more likely that the parmacist would sell out to them if they made a good offer.

So we could end up with;
Co-op Food, Co-op Pharmacy, Co-op Bank, Co-op Funeral Directors & a John Wood Flowers? ...

...and they could be taking over the old Lynton Tavern. "It's all at the Co-op"

I used to work for the Co-op they give this 'we care about the community' impression - its BULLSHIT its all about money money money!

They have there own bank chain for gods sake!

If you care about your local community shop at small independent retailers!

What an arrogant quote from the Co-Op tosser. Yeah, you'll be putting a family out of business and possibly screwing them financially for years to come, but your customers will be able to spend more on your over-priced products and you'll create a few part-time minimum wage jobs for students.

Screw you back matey!
Is anyone aware if the Pharmacist has also been given notice?

Just received a letter/email from the Co-op which reads.

Thank you for email dated 28 April regarding your concerns in lieu of the store situated at the Wildwood Centre in Stafford.
The Society is concerned that our plans to invest in the Wildwood community and enhance our store through a £1million refurbishment is being perceived as a retrograde step.
It may be helpful to offer some clarity on the history of the Wildwood store. The previous business owner of the Wildwood Newsagents had a tenancy agreement with Somerfield that commenced on 2 November 2001 for a period of ten years, ending 1 November 2011. This agreement transferred to the present business owner on 29 August 2008. The Society purchased the store from Somerfield and commenced trading as The Co-operative Food on 27 April 2009. The Society has honoured the full duration of the tenancy agreement that it inherited from Somerfield and has exceeded this by more than two years. Appropriate notice has been served on the tenant to terminate the existing lease.
The Society has a commitment to its members and customers to invest in and improve its food stores and our annual budget for creating new stores and improving existing ones is in excess of £27million this year. We are pleased that our intentions for the Wildwood store will not only create a much-improved product range, it will also provide additional employment opportunities through the need to recruit additional job roles.
Your feedback on our Vision and Values is understood, and whilst we do not agree that our investment in the store and desire to enhance our service to the local community is in breach of those values, we do welcome insight into our members’ and customers’ viewpoints on our business decisions.
Our commitment to the Wildwood community remains very strong and we hope that our members and customers will enjoy the newly-improved store which is planned to relaunch later this year.
Yours sincerely
Martyn Cheatle John Maltby
Chief Executive President

The Co-op is being systematically buggered by these people.

The bank branch in Stafford has had a load of (members') money spent on it to make it worse, when it was perfectly OK before.

The people that now run the Co-op (in all its guises) seem to have completely forgotten the principles that were behind its formation. Just like the difference between a bank and a building society, profit was never intended to be the primary goal.

The co-op does not need the extra space the newsagents takes up. They just fancy the few grand the newsagent takes in their till rather than ali's.
They miss the point of the delivery service that Ali concentrates on being important to the community. If and when Aldi rock up in the vicinity the Co-op will be desperate to sublet part or all of that shop to anyone who will take it.

Who said Aldi was rocking up anywhere, anyway?

What we really need is a supermarket for every household, now that is convenience!*

...internet anyone?
