i'm pretty sure darts22 wrote in to the newsletter on this very subject a few weeks ago.. either that, or s/he's quoting it verbatim lol..
You're very close. It wasn't me who wrote in the local paper. It was a disgruntled police officer in the Stafford post. I thought that this would promote some discussion and education.

Quite, if I ever cycle on the A449 after West Way I aklways meet pedestrians on the cycle path, and it's really not fun going over the kerbs on the wrong side
Unlike Motor Cyclists who pay road tax, cyclists don't ans as pedestrians pay for cycle routes they have just as much right to use them as cyclists do
As much right to use them but then complain that cyclists are in their way? Hmmm. Safety is paramount. I used to cycle to uni every day, when there was no cycle paths on Weston Road. Even wearing a helmet, there was no way I was going to use the road, I'd have got killed by motorists who don't care who else is on the road. I've seen plenty of people knocked off bikes, growing up on the A449 there never seemed to be a week go by without my mother outside helping a bleeding cyclist that had been knocked off by an idiotic driver. My brother was knocked off at least 5 times.
Yes, I too use the safest place to cycle for my own safety. The Highway Code says that pedestrians and cyclists account for 1 in 4 of those killed in road collisions.

darts22 have you ever been hit by a car when you're on a push bike? I have, it hurt and I had to take three weeks off work with a sprained ankle. I'm lucky thats all it was. Funnily enough the blameless car drive didn't stop either the c**t.

If you'd like to experience it first hand i'll happily run you down.
now now calm down

Eh? pedestrians pay for cycle routes so the have just as much right to use them.... what a stupid comment. Do car drivers that contribute to cycle paths and pavements also have a right to drive their cars on the pavement.

And how silly of you to complain about cyclists using spaces "meant for pedestrians" but then trying to justify people walking in cycle lanes (which are obviously meant for cyclists).... if I wasn't so sure you were serious, I would say you were having a joke... :?:

So you always cycle on the road? And you always feel safe?!

I'm perfectly calm, I was just asking if you'd ever been hit by a car, particularly whilst minding your own business riding your pushbike. I'll take that as a no then. Believe me, it scares the shizzle out of you behizzle! It did me anyway. I suppose I'm more angry that they didn't stop, well they did stop, and then drove on again, which is possibly worse.

How often are there incidents of collissions between pedestrians and cyclists, I'm struggling to think of a single one. I can however mention three members of my own family who have been hit by drivers whilst they were riding their bikes. One of them didn't survive. The driver got 3, yes THREE years and was let out after 21 months. This was a decade ago now so I presume he's also back behind the wheel living it up.

If only she had been on the pavement.....

So where do children ride their bikes? I see kids going to school every day, plenty heading up to Balfour and as young as 11, on pushbikes. You want them on the roads?!?!?!?!
Ah, well......... this is where it gets contentious. Apparently it is not illegal to ride on a footway. So you have to distinguish.
Fancy distinguishing for me? Who can and who can't, and why?

TBH I've pretty much given up cycling again, sick of getting forced into the gutters by car users :(

The 1 in 4 relates vehicles v pedestrians and cyclists

it has to be said, darts22, that this seems to be an instance of someone complaining about something purely because it's "wrong," rather than it actually being a problem..

you have already admitted that it can very often be unsafe on the roads, and as others have said in reality there are very few accidents twixt pedestrians and cyclists 'pon the footpath.. i get the impression that you just don't like seeing cyclists there, and so see fit to complain..

Isn't the issue cyclists vs pedestrians though?

If 1/4 of all accidents are betwen cyclists/pedestrians and cars then i see even less incentive to be on the road. If it were something like 1/100 maybe more people would chance it.

here's your original post:

you clearly state here that cyclists make footpaths "unsafe for pedestrians".. how can you say you haven't complained about cyclists, when that is the sole point of your original post?
