The Golden Egg - Anyone Remember it?

Last night Glenn Morris mentioned on Stafford Radio that there used to be a cafe in town called The Golden Egg and was trying find out where it was, or if he'd imagined it. This prompted me to make some enquiries with neighbours and family today. It seems that some people sort of recall it, but no-one seems to know where it was. Can any fellow forumites help out with this as it's now driving quite a few people a bit mad!

That's weird, I mentioned in my post earlier this evening... Anyway, although I was only small at the time, I seem to remember it was somewhere along where Jessops and Monsoon are now. Could it be seen as you walked out of Woolworths, maybe? Like I say, I was small... :)

The Golden Egg was wonderful. It was where I always wanted to go for my birthday and pre-dated McDonalds in Stafford. It was like Wimpey but you could get baked beans with meals, instead of peas, which was the Wimpey way. It had big, squashy-backed plastic bench seats and felt incredibly trendy. It was opposite Burton/Co-op, approximately where the Boots optician is now.

I thought that it was where Costa is, or possibly next-door. I think it had a back entrance on Bank Passage.

Which one is Costa? I don't get into the town centre very much and am confused by all the coffee shops. If it is on the main high street opposite the pie shop and co-op then you are probably right. Before Sketchley, there was a frock shop on that corner, which had beautiful big, swirly-glass door handles. The Golden Egg was between that frock shop and the Market Square.

Costa is where Sketchley was - by the alley-way. The Egg was definitely between the alley and the square.

Edit - OK, just had it confirmed from the horse's mouth that it was in the unit next to where Costa(ex-Sketchley) is now - i.e. Vodafone.

That's great, thanks for your help folks, I've just shown my next door neighbour your posts and it appears to be all coming back to him now! The one thing he did remember was that they had orange seats. At least he'll be able to sleep tonight now.

I believe that there was also a Golden Egg in Wolverhampton, and possibly others, too. It might have been a small Midlands-based chain...

Bang-on, here is a picture of the Wolverhampton one, almost.
