I've previously taken the OH to Market Vaults for a burger on a Friday night. A coupe of things to consider. I'm fairly sure they stop serving food at about 8.30pm (Please someone correct me if I'm wrong). You may also want to get they early (i.e. 7ish) in order to get a table. We went a couple of months ago and struggled to get a table, however we did go after 8 and therefore it was our own fault.
The burgers at Market Vaults are superb and the beer is equally excellent.
Its also worth noting whilst enjoying a pint in there, one of my favourite Toby Keith tracks was played, made my night.
At weekends it is - played at a volume that necessitates SHOUTING at the nearest person's earhole.... the music in there is ... not in your face.

Not great for group occasions.
In FACT, i have even once been in your very FACE - hairy as it was - asking you to turn it down.Surely you only mean the live band from 9pm on a Saturday night? That's hardly all weekend.
Well that's good to hear, because, you see, it's all very well saying -my experience last friday wasnt like that at all, the music was very low.
- but... if you want a quiet drink there are quieter pubs.
- it is, indeed, far and away the best pub in the town centre. The Rose & Crown is the quieter pub for a quiet drink, as is the Sun, with which it vies for an undecided, and very close, 2nd/3rd spot in that competition.... there's not many pubs left like this one...
Everytime I go in there's a bloke with a cockateil hair cut staring into his phone
Just saying
