Town Centre footpath closures

Confused

Don't know whether anyone saw in last weeks Newsletter, the public notices for footpath and cycleway closures?

This is in relation to the Riverside development. From what I can tell the footpath and cycle path along Queensway (opposite ASDA) AND the footpath along South Walls from the Queensway to the car park entrance are going to be closed from November 12th until 2014. Am I the only one that thinks these public notices are confusing, a diagram would help!

This seems outrageous to me, particularly as there is no footpath the other side of Queensway. The alternate route is given as going into the town centre and back out again. The South Walls closure will mean crossing the road twice to avoid it.

I think they should be made to provide proper alternative routes, if necessary taking a small width off South Walls for example. I'd be interested to see what others think.

Is this a fait accompli or can it be stopped?

The point of public notices is that they act as a consultation period. You should be able to use the contact details to request more information and if you feel it necessary, complain.

why would you want to stop large scale investment in the town that will create jobs just so people can walk a slightly shorter route

Slightly longer walk, I make it 3 times longer! Anyway, they can make the investment and take a little more care about those they inconvenience? The two are not incompatible?

Gotta agree, closing footpaths for over a year with no alternative seems wrong. A 3x longer walk is a bit of a **** take, why not close a lane and redirect those in cars?

But only if it is where I am thinking, some plans would help!

I can't see a footpath along queensway, do you mean the one that runs along the north edge of the green bit behind the flats? If so I see what you mean, anyone wanting to go from pennycroft to red lion street (for example) will now need to go via eastgate street. As north walls is two lanes and one way I fail to see why this is being closed.

I suspect they will make a temporary path (so to speak) a slightly fenced off route marked pedestrians, as is the case with similar developments.

I'd have thought so. It's a busy pedestrian route and to fail to make appropriate arrangements would leave them open to accusations of negligence.

Hi tek-monkey,

Just to clarify, as far as I can tell it is the footpath and cycleway along Queensway opposite ASDA, between the Lichfield Road island and SOUTH Walls. Plus the length of South Walls between Queensway/ASDA and the car-park entrance opposite Staffordshire Place. The path you mention is between Lammascote Road and Goal square and is already closed for the St Georges Access work.

I'll see if I can scan in the public notices.

Hi PeterD,

There is no mention of temporary paths, just closures and long diversions. Very inconvenient.

The path from St. Georges was supposed to reopen in November. Doesn't look like it will at the mo.

The notices are displayed inaccordance with legislation and are there to notify the public so that appeals can be lodged if required.

I'm not quite sure where you mean, but I suggest you put in your concerns. May I suggest the appeal questions the results of any "Non-Motorised User" (NMU) audits/surveys carried out.

The footpath along side the St George's housing will be opne again in November as planned, work is ahead of schedule.

The cycle path for Asda is the one that is down the embankment of Queensway on the left hadn side if you are in the car going north past Asda, it ran along the old recreation centre and is now along side the car park there. South Walls is closed on one side only, no problems at all.

Can you still go along the river, under the Queensway and up into Asda car-park?

When I went past today there were two lines of paviors along where the edge of the re-instated path might be..
