Concerns £1.8 billion M6 work will lead to traffic chaos through Stafford

M6 work could lead to diversion.

A £1.8 billion investment in Staffordshire roads – including the M6 at Stafford – has been welcomed but major concerns have been raised about traffic being diverted through Stafford while work goes on.

The Government investment for the West Midlands will aim to ease congestion, cut journey times and improve safety.

The work includes creating a new smart motorway between M6 junctions 13 and 15, which means it would use traffic management at busy times, including variable speed limits and cars driving on the hard shoulder.

But Stafford MP Jeremy Lefroy says he is pushing for at least one carriageway to be kept open when work begins at junction 13, which is likely to be in 2017.

He says the junction may have to shut for 28 days, with traffic diverted through Stafford - which he fears will leave Stafford clogged.

He said: "On the odd occasion or at night it might be fine, but we cannot have it for 28 days. We have got to make sure that diversion does not happen."

The work is part of the Government's Road Investment Strategy and was announced by Highways England, which is responsible for motorways and major trunk roads.

Other measures for Staffordshire and neighbouring areas include development of a new link road connecting the M54, M6 and the M6 Toll, widening of the A500 at Etruria in Stoke and a new, bigger M6 junction 10.

Staffordshire County Council leader Philip Atkins said: "These new schemes are a huge boost for Staffordshire as together they will improve connections to the county, ease congestion, cut journey times and help make our busiest roads even safer.

"Good links to the county are good for residents, good for business and really underpin a growing economy, so it is great news to see Staffordshire's major routes benefit from this investment."

Across the West Midlands, Highways England will also spend around £600m on the maintenance of its motorways and trunk roads.

County Council leader Philip Atkins appears oblivious to the problem. :stafford: When is the new Doxey by-pass starting, will that be going on at the same time ?

What a load of old shit. The Highways Agency / Highways England have been installing 'smart motorways' on the M6 south of J13 for ever and a day and they haven't had to close the motorway for weeks on end before. It is literally not a thing that would ever happen.

Thanks MP LeFroy for campaigning against an imaginary problem. What a great use of your time.

from what i gather it is only the slip roads at j13 that would close not the main carriageway between 13-14

So the complaint is that they might close the J13 on ramp for a bit? Not only can I not see that happening (the only other junction that has been closed for so long is J9 and that was to prevent congestion on an already busy stretch, as the M5 was simultaneously being repaired), nobody in their right mind would divert to J14, the logical route would be to go down to j12.

Your statement includes "right mind" and "logical".......
