A difficult question from last night. Jeremy Paxman asked:

Which County Town, close to the M6, lies on the River Sow?

Of course, that bunch of layabout students didn't have a clue :lol: .

See if they had listened to the Stafford Song - or maybe the question setter has heard.

"The Greatest Town of all is on the river Sow"

I'm a Staffooooooordian
Recently, I heard that a when a class of seven year old Stafford school pupils were asked which river runs through town, the one who answered correctly was asked by the teacher how the child knew this. The reply - "Stafford Song". Ahh!

While we are on the "Stafford on the telly" tip, here's one from a fortnight ago for anyone who missed it on the Forum Flickr page

which is a little bit better than 5 from the previous 17.

did anyone watch eastenders this evening? the dad from that new family (indian bloke - called mahmood or something like that) was talking to his daughter about a cock-up with the removal men, and claimed they had sent his stuff to walford in staffordshire! now, i'm assuming "walford" is a completely fictional name, and so for the purposes of this "gag" the writers presumably just pulled "staffordshire" out of thin air.. i wonder if someone behind the scenes is from our beloved county :strange:

edit: or i guess they could have meant walford in shropshire, and just got the name slightly wrong :raise:

Didn't see Benders tonight, not watched since The Dagmar got burned down. But, you've reminded me of an episode of 'auf wiedersehen pet' way, way back, and a reference they made to a 'little village in Stafford' they were working on. The rumours, as I remember were that they were referring to Gnosall, which at that time was being built up.

Has anyone ever seen the comedy spin off from Porridge called 'Going Straight'. Well in the first episode it is where Fletcher leaves Slade prison and is on the train to his home (somewhere up north) and on the way he has to get out at Stafford station. Only the station is not Stafford it just has the signs up for it. Looked nothing like our award winning station either.

<SITCOM GEEK MODE=ON>
Fletcher lived in North London, so that is where he would have been going. Slade Prison is in Cumberland (I believe now Cumbria?).
<SITCOM GEEK MODE=OFF>

Does he have to get out at Stafford, or does the train go through it? I think a Cumberland -> North London train would have to go through Stafford - anyone? From what I remember of reading the novelisation (anyone else remember them? :) ) the train only passed through Stafford. It's a lot of years since I read it, though, so my memory may be going wrong again.

I've never seen it; the BBC have never as far as I can tell seen fit to repeat it. Anyone got a copy I can borrow for a weekend? :)

Love you too :P
If you think that was bad, get me started on which football team Fletcher supported.

.

If I remember correctly, it's a couple of thieves, that have raided a jewellers in Stafford, that join the train.

I thought that some of the external shots of the train were filmed at Stafford, whilst the shot of the thieves racing down the station "SUBWAY" to join the train was filmed somewhere in the Manchester area. But I could be wrong.

He exits the front of Stoke station.
He does get off at Stafford, as a bloke down the pub was working there at the time they filmed it.
