I know it wasn't the 80's, but The Italian Job was left open for a sequel, why didn't one ever happen?

:o

is this good or bad? i can't make up my mind.. i mean, remakes are one thing - i think everyone can agree that the recent retelling of the batman story has so far been good shit, superman wasn't bad, transformers was heavy like "woah", and even the new hulk looks pretty smashing (:haw: lolz) - but sequels are almost always universally bad, innit? and i mean bad meaning bad not bad meaning good..

still, i'm not one of these people who gets his knickers in a twist about such things, and starts crying about "why can't they leave the classics alone?? :gonk:".. if someone wants to make Back To The Future 4: Quest for a Cure for Parkinson's then have at it, i say.. if it turns out to be dross, it's not like it detracts from the original(s) we all know and love..

I only knew cos I saw it floating around a certain bay, known to be inhabited by pirates. As for the others:

Evil Dead 4: I thought Bruce wouldn't do another?
Robocop 4: Can't remember 3, must have been good
Dirty Dancing 3: 3? Eh? Again, missed num 2 (luckily)
Goonies 2: NO, NO, NO!

wikipedia said:
According to a "Making Of" documentary,[4] the film's ending was the brainchild of producer Deeley. He was unsatisfied with any of the four endings written at the time. He conceived of the film's current ending as a cliffhanger appropriate to an action film which also left open an opportunity for a sequel. The documentary describes how Deeley envisioned a sequel would begin: helicopters would be used to save the bus seen teetering on the edge of a cliff at the end of the first film. The grateful gang would soon discover that it is the Mafia that has saved them, and the sequel would have been about stealing the gold bullion from them.

Although it received a Golden Globe nomination (for "Best Foreign Film in the English Language") the film was not a success in America. Michael Caine blamed its failure there on an unattractive and misleading advertising campaign.[5] As a result, plans for a sequel were shelved.

Thanks for that, I had always wondered.

technically, in first blood, rambo doesnt directly kill the bad policeman - he just throws a rock and the guy falls out of the helicopter. check it:

the bad policeman is in a helicopter chasing rambo and shooting at him with a rifle. the pilot is jittery because he's trying to control the 'copter at the bottom of a gorge with an updraft. the policeman (gault?) has already threatened him with death because he cant keep the damn thing still so he's even more nervous. gault unbuckles himself to get a better line of sight. rambo, cornered, picks up a rock and throws it at the helicopter. it bounces off the windscreen, making the pilot react wildly and because gault isnt buckled up he falls out and dies.

first blood is a great film. macho yes, but the whole point is that rambo could kill them all but doesnt. its the hollywood 80's sequels that got hold of them and decided that it would be better viewing to have an incredible body count.

the two torture scenes in first blood are flashbacks to being a pow in 'nam. these are brief shots to reinforce the fact that rambo is slightly unhinged and tell the audience that you shouldnt fook with him. the signs are there for the policemen to see too and even one of them, mitch (david caruso), points it out. the rest ignore the warning signs that rambo aint all there and push him over the edge.
