The problem with old upright piano's is that they have often sat around for years as very large ornamental pieces of furniture. In which case they require professional tuning and it DOESN'T COME CHEAP!!

I quite often miss playing piano myself but simply don't have the space. A customer recently offered me a barely used electric one for which he had paid a few thousand pounds for - for quite literally a minimal percentage of that. I had to decline it for space reasons :(

It's not so much the cost of tuning, its the fact it might not work for long after tuning.

A piano is a series of wires under tension. If a piano has sat in a centrally heated house and the base plate has been exposed to this dry environment the wood might split and crack. In this case you can pay for a tuner and within a few hours it will be out of tune since the split will result in the tension being lost.

If you do get a piano I would recommend putting a bowl of water inside it to help the moisture levels and prevent the base plate from drying out.

It really depends on the quality of the piano and if you want to pay for it to be reconditioned. But if you opt for a reasonable make like a Beckstein you will find models pre 1890 are a lot more prone to having a split in the base plate. Getting this fixed will cost about 5k.
