The people behing WS1 and Insomnia look like they have aquired the old Zanzibar complex. The new place should be open by September and one of the names suggested for the place is ST16.

The newly refurbed place will also makes use of the roof and maybe the 3rd floor.

The midlands biggest dancefloor.

They sure about that? Also, having worked there for 6 years, I am unaware of a third floor? There was the amp room, not sure that could hold more than 8 people though! Also think that roof will need replacing, as it would never hold the weight of a few hundred people + bars etc.

I was told the 3rd floor was just the burnt out balcony... that over looked the dance floor below.

As for the Midland's biggest dancefloor bit, it could well be because Zanzibar began promoting this and had the plans draw up to move all the bars on the 2nd floor to the sides of the room creating one big ball like room area!

Burnt out balcony? Funny, never remember seeing that. It used to have 3 floors before it burnt down, were 2 flats on the 3rd, was not aware of anything up there survived the rebuild. As for the dancefloor, thats exactly as it used to be until late 2000!

@tek-monkey... I think what they're reffering to as the third floor is possibly just the VIP lounge as we more recently knew it. I'd hardly call it a third floor though if that is the case. lol.

I quite like the thought of the name ST16 though. I think names like that are catchy & modern. At one time I said if I ever won the lottery (as if!) I'd buy out the gala binbo club & turn it into a nightclub called UNIT 10 (it's address)

Ah, got ya. Its, like, 3 feet higher than the second floor! I was thinking of the amp room, which was a real 'floor' (and housed a very dirty mattress, I was scared what I'd catch going near that!). As for the roof garden, still not sure the roof would take it.

Oh, and as Stoke already has ST1 people will think its a titty bar.

"Utopia clubs ltd, our parent company has just done a deal for a massive new club in stafford!!!!!

Opening time is going to be in about september-ish

Dunno how they've did it but they're planning to up the capacity from 1,800 to 2,500 - hmm a 700 people roof terrace sounds fun - Hope there's a bar up there too

Seems the plans are actually to remove a roof section to allow smoking upstairs, not make a roof terrace on top of the current roof. So somehow I can't see the capacity being upped that far, doesn't make sense. Especially if upstairs is being reduced in size to add the smoking area, means less room indoors for the bars.

The plans are on the council website, it looks like the upstairs VIP area will be the roof terrace. There's also seperate 18 and 21 entrances...

VIP area? i think that the current 'celebrity' fixation era is coming to an end so this area could end up being underused. I seem to recall they had plans to screen events such as BB evictions and high profile sporting events, given the current flop of the former and the otherwise easier access to the latter i'd say this part of the venture is about 5 years too late........

I recall a Mr Hayley and his Comets doing a rather good turn around 1973 followed by the likes of Thin Lizzy and Cockney Rebel , The New York Dolls and later The Cure - and a sold out save the high house Climax Blues Band night.

And Bob Geldof telling us to go round to the Swan Hotel after the gig and trash the place because they wouldnt let him stay there..

It would have been great to have a major rock venue in the town again but I fear squaddie punch ups and heaps of vomit will be the disorder of the day now
