Vegetarians - let them eat flesh

Daughter & prospective son-in-law want to get married in Sunderland as that is where they met at uni. They were looking for venues for their reception and were more than a little attracted by Lumley Castle and arranged an appointment with one of the venue's wedding co-ordinaters. Not a very welcoming person from the start. Started discusssing menus and were shown a list of main courses from which they could pick one for everyone. They asked about a vegetarian option and were told that that was the salmon. Daughter pointed out that a number of the guests were vegetarian and none of them would eat fish or regard fish as a vegetarian dish. Co-ordinator at that point got very annoyed and was very unhappy about the idea of having to consider an alternative which would add a significant extra cost. Hate to think what the significant cost would be, having a second main dish for carnivores would have an additional cost of a mere £10 a head for everyone.

Its rather scary to think someone in that position thinks that salmon is a vegetable, let alone to not have a vegetarian option as standard. I'm a carnivore, if it didn't have a face its not a meal, bet I still respect the views of those who don't eat meat. Unless they try to tell me I'm wrong for eating meat of course, that just starts an argument :D

Completely personal choice as far as I am concerned, I just choose not to eat meat. Not a moral high (or low) point

Congratulations on the forthcoming wedding, Noah - it must be an amazing feeling to watch a son or daughter get married and realise how quickly they have grown up.

I am sure that they are not going to return to Lumley Castle but in their position, I would certainly write to the general manager explaining I would be taking my business elsewhere. Then I would copy that letter to the Vegetarian Society and the local paper.

Thanks Flossie. Daughter has sent a very stroppy letter to the most senior person she could identify at the place. Awaiting response with interest. There are some much better places in the area. That one looked too good to be true and it was.

Latest update. Grovelling apologies, the person they saw was unwell and shouldn't have been at work ... Promised to phone the following day, but it took them two days to phone. Now offering all sorts of extras and significant discounts. Mysteriously several vegetarian dishes are now available, although they all sound as though they come straight out of the frozen food store into the microwave. I'm still very unenthusiastic, and there is a much nicer place own the road.
