Veggie/Vegan shopping tips

It really annoys me how many restaurant menus conscientiously highlight vegetarian and vegan dishes among the appetisers and main courses, only to give up with the puddings. I also get cross when the only 'vegetarian' option is made with Parmesan, which is not vegetarian. I might as well just take sandwiches.

Two weeks ago I was served a vegetarian pasta dish containing pancetta. The manager said they understood that I don't eat meat but that "there was only a very little in there".

Sorry. I'm sounding grumpy aren't I?

It's probably past my bedtime.

That reminds me of a scene from The Royal family when nana asked if Anthony's vegetarian girl friend if she could eat wafer thin ham.

This. Every farking Christmas.

Uncle Andy: 'Oooooooooh you sure you don't want any turkey?!!'
Me: *Through gritted teeth* 'No thankyou Uncle Andy - same as last year - still a vegetarian!'

Quick Vegie tip.... or just if you generally want some amazing food in Birmingham near to the Bull Ring and don't want the rubbish fast food chains:

The Warehouse Cafe

I'm a meat eater but took the wife and I can happily say I loved it and didn't miss not having meat at all.

Mexican bean burger (Vegetarian)

Switching supermarkets, when it comes to veggie burgers, I find asda's offerings are a lot less bland. I wouldn't recommend throwing these on the BBQ as they have a tendency to break apart easy, but hey at least they are dry husks like most store bought veggie burgers!

Eating out in stafford (Vegetarian):

I have a penchant for the veggie burgers at the Bean Encounter, but the offerings at the Market Vaults are fantastic too. On the budget end however, spoons offerings are nothing to shout home about, but the vegetable burritos are pretty good value for money.

So, Staffordian vegetarians/vegans ... top tips for survival in BBQ season ?
Please keep recommendations like this coming as I welcome the chance to try new stuff. I'm not vegetarian but neither am I someone that needs something identifiable as meat on my plate for it to be considered a meal. Beans on toast is fine with me.

I love going there, I don't get the chance very often though.

If anyone does go there and notices the '100% Vegan' shop next door, please note that there is a boycott on the shop for a very good reason - I can't really explain in public, but if you want to know the reason then I can tell you via PM.

Ooohhh, that sounds exciting. Being neither veggie or vegan I would be unlikely to use it anyway. What I can't understand is why you can't say in public the reason for the boycott if it is based on true information?!?!?

There is no conviction - to my knowledge two victims have reported to the police, but due to the nature of these incidents there is unlikely to be one.

If halal meat offends you more than the traditional UK method of slaughter, then you might like to know that Kingsmill product advertise themselves as halal. I assume the point of this pandering to muslims to increase sales, althought what is in bread that could possibly be halal is beyond me. I wonder if they realise that they've rather shot themselves in the foot because by pandering to the muslim consumer they have alienated the Sikh one because they are forbidden to eat ritually slaughtered meat and therefore avoid all halal products, even bread. It's a very strange country we are becoming :(

You are just misunderstanding what Halal means by it's misrepresentation in right wing newspapers.

(Arabic: حلال‎ ḥalāl, 'permissible') or halaal[1] is any object or an action which is permissible to use or engage in, according to Islamic law. The term covers and designates not only food and drink but also all matters of daily life.[2] It is one of five الأحكام الخمسة (al-ahkam al-khamsah)fard (compulsory), mustahabb (recommended), halal (allowed), makruh (disliked), haram (forbidden) — that define the morality of human action in Islam.[3]Mubah is also used to mean "permissible" or "allowed" in Islam.

I know, all discussion about muslims and halal must be because I'm an idiot brain washed by right wing media and unable to think for myself...........oh and a racist, obviously.

I don't believe I gave any judgements ? Defensive much ?

althought what is in bread that could possibly be halal is beyond me.

You posed a question, or at least acknowledged a lack of understanding of the subject. I highlighted the reason why 'bread could possibly be halal', and cited the likely reason is a general misrepresentation of what Halal means.

If you did know what Halal means, I'm rather flummoxed as to what would be confusing over bread been considered Halal?

Were you instead saying something different and I misunderstood ?

We're off topic enough, let's leave it at that.

Thanks Lunar!

Quorn released some a few years ago and they were vile!

Needless to say they didn't stick around long and I haven't seen them back since!
I've tried them - they're quite good, I thought. Sometimes they have them in Holland & Barrett (if you go and ask, they should be able to order you some in).

Does anyone user the Happy Cow website? I love it, put in any destination I'm travelling too and it brings up all the vegan/veggie shops and restaurants including reviews. Discovered a wonderful Veggie cafe in Krakow last year thanks to Happy Cow and will definitely use when we travel to Europe again this summer :)
