Virginmedia & Wireless

Has anybody successfully setup a wireless router with a virgin cable modem, I've got a belkin wireless router which works, it dishes out IP addys but does not connect to the net. The modem is connected to the cable, the rj45 to the router & another wired connection to my pc = no net connection. The modem direct to my pc works fine. Is a username/password hardcoded into the modem? PPPOA or PPPOE?

I've taken over a mates account who only used it for a month so to avoid him paying another 11months for a service he is not using he has transferred the service to my address. Works fine with the modem but as soon as I add the router no connection on the router setup page, anybody got any pointers please?

No username or password required, they just work. I believe its the modems MAC address that lets it online, we're using a mates one here without issue despite my account being cancelled. With the older modems they remembered the MAC of the PC connecting, so you had to make the router spoof that MAC address, but all the newer ones don't seem to need that. Could be worth a try though.

I've got a belkin wireless router and virgin modem, I did have trouble setting it up as well, cann't remember how I got it to work in the end, try updating the firmware for the router, think I had to disable widows firewall to set it up too, then just reactivate it when your done

i'm on virgin, and can access fine with my linksys wireless router..

i had a similar problem to the one your describing a few years ago.. turns out the gateway in the LAN profile had been set wrong (i think it was a residual setting from an old router, which used a different IP to the new one).. try disconnecting your PC from the router, deleting all your LAN profiles, then reboot with the router connected (via cable).. should pick it up straight away, and configure it correctly..

if i remember rightly, belkin routers use different IPs to most other routers (192.168.2.1 or something weird).. do an ipconfig /all from a command prompt, and make sure your gateway IP matches that of your router!

When we had a belkin router we had no end of problems with it. I've since used both a Netgear and a Linksys, both of which worked without problems, and my ancient Zoomair (one of the original wireless routers) always worked without issues.

I cancelled my Virgin Media in January, paid my disconnection fee and everything. 7 Days later I received a sorry to see you go letter. 7 Days later I received a bill for my monthly amount. 7 Days later I received a disconnection notice.

What a bunch of morons.

Damn! how embarrassing! found a link that said that I should power off the modem before connecting it to another device, did that and everything works fine!

Well unfortunately I bought a Belkin before reading all this.

A couple of set-up attempts, and at least I can come on here! I have yet to try use anything wireless, as The Venerable Mrs Seed has her laptop at home, and the seedling has not yet been able to go wireless on his XBox, because the gizmo for the rear is in incredibly short supply!

I will keep you posted, but so far ... so good!
