Just adopted an abandoned chameleon that our cats brought in, had it checked out and its fine. We have decided to adopt it but have no kit, so at present he is in a tupperware tub with bark in it from the very helpful people at Fishworld =]

Need something ASAP to change this, please help if you can.

Many thanks.

Hi there,

Well done for taking the poor thing in...i have a yemen chameleon myself (and also have kept other lizards for sometime) so if you have any questions please feel free to PM me because i know from experience it can be quite a learning curve.

One friendly bit of advice.....please take the bark out and put kitchen roll in....i know fishworld mean well and good on them for helping you out, but yemens (especially baby's) often mistake the bark for food, try to eat it and unfortunately pass on as a result of impaction. Unfortunately we know of at least one case where bark was advised and provided and this sad situation happened with in days.

If you are wanting to keep him(her?) permanantly, then it might be worth investing in a flexarium (of course this is only my opinion but spent a good while researching the most suitable housing). They are relatively cheap but very durable and perfect for the ventilation that they require.

It might be worth registering with RFUK (reptile forum UK) and having a look round the forum, there are plenty of experienced keepers who would be more than willing to give you advice.

Again its only personal preference, but we purchased our reptiles and equipment from GR8 reps in Rugeley and found them to be very helpful.

Although when reading up about them, they may seem to be "grumpy" animals to keep, our yemen is a welcome addition to our family and is quite a character! Loves sitting on shoulders or heads and climbing the net curtains.

Best of luck to you!

I forgot to add, we are currently making a larger house for our Cham, so we have him temporarily housed in an upturned degu/chinchilla cage from pets at home. costs about £90 and we took the wooden shelves out but we would ideal as a stop gap measure and I think they still have some in, it allows them to climb and gives plenty of space to fix uv light and heat bulb to.

We had a free-range Chameleon in the garden in Cyprus. He would often wander into the vicinity of people, catch some passing insect and then wander off looking smug. I suspected that we were being used as bait....

Hi guys, thanks for all your advice, expecting delivery of a 4x2x2 exo terra flexarium and everything else required to get us going tonight, very helpful chaps at GR8 Reps in rugeley are bringing it round for us after they close tonight so big thumbs up to them!

He seems to be doing well, has eaten all the locusts that have been put in yesterday, will try to remember and post a piccy up of his new home once he's all happy!

I'm really glad to hear that GR8Reps are helping you out.....they are lovely lovely people and i can't wait to see some pics when he's settled. Have you decided on a name for him? and do you know what "type" of chameleon he is? i.e yemen/panther etc
