"The council will do it for a fee," would be my best advice. If you want me to look up a number it'll cost you...

1, The Council used to do it on the basis that the ratepayers were funding them to provide public services.

2, They then started charging extra for people who weren't OAPs.

3, I believe that the now may be charging OAPs extra, as well.

4, Alternative operators are often alleged to be cheaper.

5, I really would prefer to give somebody else the extra money, even if it isn't mine.

Call my sister Karen on 01785 604866 - she does pest control and is cheaper than the council. She charges £35 for wasps nests.
thanks for the info, but i ended up taking matters into my own hands!

i went to B&Q and bought a can of Wasp Killer, and a can of Wasp Nest Destroyer.. armed with these, my sister and i operated a pincer formation to gain access to the shed and prop the door open, subduing the first wave of their defense with the Wasp Killer.. this exposed the nest inside, and aggravated the little buggers no end, so we retreated inside to plan our attack..

once the buzzing frenzy had died down, i carefully positioned myself within range, and unleashed the fury!!! a direct hit with the Wasp Nest Destroyer from a distance of 2m - the whole nest was encased and the air filled with the sound of a billion dying wasps! AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA TAKE THAT, NATURE!!
You are the master, we shall all bow down to you o great one......

I am lead to believe that wasp larva are much prized in fishing circles as bait and that some people will take them away for you for nothing. Frank Holt on the Marston Road is a local suppliers of bait.

If the nest is where I understand it to be from the description that I've had, then it is in a very restricted roof-space and the access hatch is one of the smallest that I've ever seen.

Further investigationa will ensue.

The council are a rip off now, £25 consultation! Plus £55 to kill a nest. Anyone know an independent offering a cheaper service?

B&Q's Wasp Nest Killer Powder has been very effective when I've used it. About three quid for lots of powder, far more than one nest will require. It can sometimes be necessary to extend the range by using something like a BiC pen tube..

Do it on a cool evening when they're a bit quieter, of course...

The farmers supplies near Simmonds the builders merchants also have some good stuff for Wasps. They have a smoke bomb type thing that you can let off in the attic.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Perhaps not ideal if they're in the attic, for example..?
Having a 2 litre bottle of Evian to hand might help to counter any unwanted 'side-effect'.

I'd be interested to see how it would work out. In someone else's attic, of course.

The seem to have bloody big hamsters in Cannock though...
