After receiving calls, through a secret underworld of Starlings, for 'More of the same', 'Bomber' Harris was forced to rethink...

McDonnell Douglas C9 Nightingale - a bit late to see service in WW2, and the Red Cross would have been regarded as cheating..

As for the Starlings, there were, of course, Stirlings on the Mannheim raid. This could explain your confusion..
