What is IMAX exactly?

I really want to see a couple of films at the moment.

One, Philomena.

Two. Gravity. Having read the reviews on this they say....you must watch it on 3 D and you must watch it on IMAX.
I have googled and the nearest is in Birmingham. Can anyone tell me what IMAX is and is it worth travelling down the motorway for?

Oooh is Gravity any good? I quite fancy watching it in 3D.
I remember watching a film on IMAX at the media centre in Bradford. It was a while ago now but from what I can remember, the screen was larger than a normal cinema screen. It was created to kind of envelope the audience and make them feel part of the film. I think the screen is wider than your own vision so you can literally glance sideways and still be watching the film.
I wouldn't like to be responsible for sending you to Birmingham to watch it though lol. It's personal taste I guess :)

Haha, excuse my early morning mistake! I thought I read that you have seen Gravity! I have since consumed my daily allowance of caffeine and can consequently, read again!

Thanks girls.

Kellie that makes sense because the reviews say that you actually feel like you are there up in space with them. It's not the sort of movie I would usually choose to watch but the reviews are so brilliant I thought I would give it a go.

Philomena has also got rave reviews.

Same here, it's not my usual type but with it being available in 3D I thought I'd give it a go. Usually it's animation that's in 3D so I'm looking forward to getting the time to go :)

I think IMAX stands for Image Maximum, the screen is much taller than a normal movie screen, and the way the film is shot means you can be much closer (seating is generally more banked than in a normal cinema) so that you can be closer to the action. I've only ever seen 3D films at IMAX, if you haven't been to one before I'd say it is worth a go!

About IMAX https://www.imax.com/about/ The nearest one is indeed Birmingham.

I've only seen one 3D IMAX film and that was at Kennedy Space Center in Florida and it suited the content of the film shown.

But I'm really not bothered by 3D in normal films as I think the technology gets in the way of the storytelling. Actually that should read, I think the scriptwriters use 3D to hide defects in their poor scripts. I try and avoid 3D films and would rather see the normal version as I end up watching the 3D effect instead of the film.

Isn't/wasn't there an IMAX in Stoke?

No but I have been doing a bit of research but probably wont explain it very well.

It seems that for every film made in IMAX another 5 or 6 get turned down. So a cinema can show an IMAX film but unless its actually on an IMAX screen then you dont get the full effect. (Or thats the way I understand it.)

It seems that there are only about 10 or so IMAX cimemas in England.

I agree with this and usually watch films in 2D.
An exception was life of Pi which I thought was wonderful.

The reviews of Gravity said that it really works better in 3D AND at an Imex cimema to really get the feeling that you are totally there.
