It’s my mums birthday (a very big one!) she’s not much for going out for a meal but loves afternoon tea and a good slice of cake!

Recommendations?

Soup kitchens a given but we got there so often and I want to do something really special!

Any ideas would be fab!

Thankyou

Crazy Rat Lady x

I'd be tempted to try the Post House - high ranking on the posh fanciness front, though i haven't actually been in myself it at least looks very nice.

I have been told ( and by a magistrate! ) that the Post House quite acceptable for coffee and a bun - but, again, I haven't been in there.

Not been told by a magistrate, but 'The Venerable Mrs Seed' rates the post house as a very agreeable spot of Tifin! She rates it so much, she hasn't invited me for fear of me lowering the tone for the staff & clientele!:monkeydance:

Hi thanks guys! Went into the posthouse today and booked us in for afternoon tea!
Very excited, a lady at work was telling me the other day how nice the tea was there
(a little pricey I may say, but mothers worth it!)
Will report back - I dont think I've ever been any where so posh - I'll let you know if they kick me out x

What a lovely thing to think about for your mum. There is a parish mag that seems to be delivered free round these parts and in it I have noticed big adverts for a place called Littywood Manor, at Bradley "A 14th century double-moated manor house on a site of national importance". They do afternoon cream teas on Wednesdays. I thought it sounded interesting and worth a visit but have not done so yet, so can't give any personal recommendation. They have a website address on the advert: www.littywoodmanor.co.uk

Not sure about £12.50 a head for afternoon tea, even if it is on quite an epic scale. They also do monthly fish & chip nights & have a murder mystery night coming up.

£12.50 nothing! Im paying £15 a head at the posh house or £23 if you want a measly glass of champagne!

Shes worth it tho!

Thankyou Floss! Will definitely have to try that! Its a shame they only do it on a wednesday (Im taking my mum on a tuesday, her birthday)

Im soo up for murder mystery tho!

Oh and Withnail - Where did you find that bag........

Is it just me that had never heard of Littywood Manor? I'm definitely up for going, if for no other reason than a nosey. I love the idea of the afternoon tea and have just remembered I've got a week off in June, which would free me up on a Weds....I'd go for the fish & chips, too, if they'd do a veggie version with mushy peas. Are mushy peas too common for a manor house? The only thing putting me off is that blooming apostrophe on Cream Tea's.

Ive never heard of it either - is it new?

Crikey those bags are expensive!!! £28 for a rat bag? For a tenner I can sell you a genuine bag chewed by a rat......

Okay guys are you ready? My afternoon tea review!

The Menu: http://www.pillarrestaurant.co.uk/afternoon-tea-menu.html

I could write an enormous point by point review (in fact I just did and thought ‘no one’s going to take the time to read this!’) so I give you bullet points!

*Food excellent – (worth specifying if your veggie/ any dietary requirements as the menu is subject to change) Plenty enough for 2 people didn’t manage to finish it all but stashed cakes in my handbag!

*We were the only ones there but the atmosphere was great and had a fab time! Décor is beautiful, to the highest standard.

*Service is good, very polite but not very attentive, I found myself having to call the poor lad over and instructing him what to do, take away dirty plates and get us more tea please!!

*Toilets immaculate, very clean but terrible if you’re tall! Any tall ladies in heels don’t stand a chance and will be forced to duck into cubicals! Oh and Marks and Spencer’s hand wash and moisturiser available and very effective hand dryers!

*Most importantly 25% off with Stafford card!

*One very important point, which was a massive let down and I thought very disappointing, the china was made in THAILAND! Thailand! Stoke on Tent and the Potteries are up the road, why aren’t they supporting them? Terrible! I know its not the most important thing but they support local food producers and I didn’t understand why not our local potteries!

All in all it was amazing and very good value for money (considering tea at the Ritz is £80 a head £15 is very reasonable!)

Let me know what you think!

Ah yes, that crazy southern funky new craze - clearing away plates...

It always gets 'em oop north

The furniture - maybe Chinese? The wines ? probably French, the sugar cane? take a guess..

Thai crocks? hardly a huge problem is it? Really? it is? Did you arrive in your British built car? wearing your English wollen mill big knickers? I do hope so - and if you did could we have a picture please -ta

Disappointingly they serve Twinings instead of the finest Yorkshire Tea picked in the famous tea fields of Harrogate...
