Which DSLR

I bought a fairly cheap digi camera back in March and have been having some fun with it (www.flickr.com/photos/zenzinnia/) but that's now in a thousand pieces after a little disagreement (www.flickr.com/photos/zenzinnia/1451518181/ ). As i've been enjoying the photo lark again (used to do loads as a kid) I'm intending to buy something new and significantly better - in fact a digital SLR in the £4 - 600 pound range (with lenses and stuff). I would be interested in anyone’s views of DSLRs in general, things to look out for etc. and also the 2 models I'm thinking of in particular.

I can't decide between the:
Canon EOS 400D which is a little cheaper, but not worth worrying about, and has a dust protection system, which is apparently more important than I thought.

and the Nikon D40x which has, I've read, a better quality lens but no dust protection - and any additional lenses are more expensive.

Your thoughts please.

Thanks
