After reading todays news regarding the cruelty that went on in a Halal Slaughterhouse. Do takeaways mention wether their meat is halal or not. Do you think it should be banned

news as follows :

One man has been sacked and three others have had their operating licences suspended after hidden cameras filmed alleged mistreatment of animals at a North Yorkshire slaughterhouse.

Footage captured by Animal Aid apparently shows sheep being kicked and punched at Bowood Lamb in Thirsk.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has begun an investigation, as Dan Johnson reports.

There is growing pressure on supermarkets and restaurants to inform consumers how animals in their meat products are killed after it emerged some were selling halal meat without clear labelling.

Religious leaders have written to the Telegraph suggesting all menus and packets should specify how animals have been slaughtered, including for products that are not kosher or halal.

It has emerged a majority of New Zealand lamb sold in UK supermarkets comes from halal abattoirs in order to ensure it can be sold to both Muslim and non-Muslim nations.

Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have all confirmed selling the imported meat.

A great deal of meat coming from animals which have been ritually slaughtered (halal and kosher) is then rejected as unfit because it fails to meet other ritual requirements. Ritual slaughterhouses would be completely uneconomic if this rejected meat was unsold. It is therefore sold to supermarkets and food processors at relatively low cost, the cheaper meat in supermarkets is almost certainly from this source. There would be great resistance from the food industry to a requirement for labeling because many people would not buy ritually slaughtered meat & it would be financially disadvantageous to them. There would also be screams of religious discrimination even although there is a way round the problems of non-ritually slaughtered meat for Muslims. In spite of these objections ritual slaughter is banned in Poland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland so there are precedents.

The only way of avoiding meat from ritually slaughtered animals, including poultry, is to become vegetarian or vegan, ot alternatively stick to pork

The vast majority of takeaways will be serving Halal meat and there is no obligation for them to declare that it is Halal meat.

I have seen the Halal symbol on some menu's but not many.

There was even a sign in the takeaway opposite the Four Crosses pub stating that the meat served there was Halal, I have never been back..

It's not just Halal slaughter houses that abuse the animals they slaughter, the rules are in place to stop it they just need enforcing.

Let's hope Henryscat doesn't see this thread!

Firstly, the vast majority of animals slaughtered for Halal are stunned before they are killed, including all New Zealand lamb.
Secondly, if you're going to get uppity about bad conditions in abbatoirs, maybe we should revisit some of the recent scandals about the way pigs, turkeys and cows have been treated in the run up to their non-religious slaughter.

I am in favour of making pre-stunning mandatory. Other countries have done it without controversy.
Attempting to boycott Halal without going the (ahem) whole hog and becoming vegetarian is futile at best.
