I'm intrigued to know how popular this sort of thing is, and how successful people have found it?

I personally have met up with people from online, but that was many, many years ago, when MSN chat rooms and Faceparty were all the rage lol. It was when I was much younger and more hedonistic, so was only ever for casual shenanigans.

Anyone got any success stories? Or horror stories m for that matter? ;)

I have set the poll to anonymous btw, so no-one will know if/how you vote!

I know of 2 married couples that met through online dating and others that are just loving the social aspect of meeting different people but haven't yet met the special one.

The key is to do the research before signing up to any agency as some are better than others.

Spend time chatting on line and get to know the person a bit before you agree to meet.

Be honest about what you want, be honest about who you are, dont lie about your age, dont send a photo 10 years out of date.

Dont judge a person on photo alone.

Dont lower your standards just because someone, anyone shows an interest. Be true to yourself and what you want from a partner.

Take your time. Meet for coffee first, not dinner.

Enjoy, if I was single I would do it for sure .

Okay, firstly I'll point out that I'm going back quite some years here to when I was a bit of a lad. I met one lady from Barmouth where I spent the weekend, really got on well but because of the distance and work commitments etc. a weekender was all that it was. I also met another from Milton Keynes, who actually came to visit me first and we dated for around 6 months until we realised we wanted different things in life - but I believe she still sometimes says hello to my eldest 2 through Facebook despite it being 15 years later.

The first was a rapid meeting, the latter was a good few weeks of phone chats before we met. Maybe that's proof that things work better if you get to know eachother for longer first, maybe it's just coincidence.

Shortly after I became a DJ and had women throwing themselves at me (JOKE!). Actually, there was just one that did. My wife!

I met my husband online through a dating site. :) I was only on there as I was rather lonely and looking for people to talk to, they had a friend section. It was back when On Digital had started up and was one of the sites you could access. After 3 months of msn conversations and phone calls we met up on an extremely wet night in Stafford, had a drink in Yate's then saw Attack of the Clones, the aim was to have dinner afterwards but he misjudged the finish time and when we came out everywhere but the Indian restaurants was shut so we ended up rather peckish in Chicago's where a rather drunk lady wearing wooden bottomed sandals danced her way through the evening as if she were clog dancing. It kept us entertained. He is lucky to have made a good enough impression to persevere with as the latter part of the evening was spent fielding phone calls from his Mum asking if he was coming home yet, we were 27.....

In the last nine years or so I've had numerous dates and three long term relationships from meeting up on date sites. I met my fiance who I've been with now for nearly four years on plenty of fish. You do need to have an open mind though and good detective skills as there are many people on POF who are just posing as single or want one night stands.

I've tried them on and off for years, but I've had little success with them - I always try to be friendly, but receive no responses when I contact people. I have managed to meet up with a couple of people through them, but neither meeting went overly well (no horror stories though!)

It will never catch on - what you really need to do is next time you are at Pontins is have your picture taken and get it made into a key ring. Then get your very best pigeon and attach it to the leg and send it off on its way . About three days later the bird will return with a new keyring ( in pink )
    You are now engaged

    Hi Jade,

Do you care to elaborate on online sites you have tried, over the years, for dating?

That could be helpful for singles that currently mop the forum hoping to find somebody worthy.

It does not matter how good the bait is if the tackle is in the wrong pond.

    Many thanks.

I've found that men and women report very different experiences from the use of dating websites. I've spoken to a few women who've used them and they mention that within a day or two of signing up to them, they get inundated with offers from all sorts of people. However, my experience, and that of a few blokes I know that have frequented these sites is pretty much the same as yours PB.

Nightclubs / dating websites - life imitating art.

That does sum up my experiences - I have a female friend who has used dating sites, and she had no shortage of messages every day. I've sent hundreds of messages to people and receive no replies at all, and I've never had anyone send a first message to me.

I've given up on them now to be honest - being shy makes this whole dating game a rather challenging business...

    Do not despair!
take good care of yourself, be presentable, polite, handsome, funny, active, interesting, good speaker and entertainer with a genuine interest in your date, a joker but serious, manly but caring, a good lover and a good provider, with good hands for a whole body massage, for washing up or ironing a shirt... with all that in your luggage make a move whenever you see something you like.

The worst that can happen? A slap in your face is not going to kill you :P

    Hi McGyver
I only really used Plenty of fish and for a time match.com which you have to pay for. To be honest as POF is free and a lot of the same people are on both I don't see the need to pay.
From a woman's point of view - make your profile interesting and fill it in fully. There's nothing worse than a really short profile that just says anything you want to know just ask. It gives the impression of not really being bothered. Put on one or two clear, recent photos and hope for the best!
As others have said the women get inundated with messages and the men rarely get any attention so if you send a message make it interesting. A first message that just says 'Hi' or 'Want to chat' isn't interesting enough to warrant a reply when you are getting 20 or 30 messages a day.

My brother uses plenty of fish and through that and facebook hes met plenty of women from all over the midlands. Hes a handsome fella just like his brother Which helps and hes only after a bit of action and there are more than a few willing to oblige! He has however started what seems like a relationship of late with a girl he met on POF which is about time as hes 35 now and never had a girlfriend as such. from what he tells me he gets plenty of messages and even gets sent pictures of a risqué nature quite often (which ive seen lol) it does seem to be more of a dogging site than a dating site.
