As for 'Winterval' BCC have had to back track because of the uproar they caused so have had to publish a statement claiming that the term was never intended to replace Christmas!
Erm, i think you will find it was the Daily Mail that had to issue that statement,
Clarifications and corrections said:
We stated in an article on 26 September that Christmas has been renamed in various places Winterval.
Winterval was the collective name for a season of public events, both religious and secular, which took place in Birmingham in 1997 and 1998.
We are happy to make clear that Winterval did not rename or replace Christmas.
... everyone knows that the Guardian is nothing more than a propaganda machine for the liberal-left.
Yeah, they ran an opinion piece by that well known Bolshevik agitator Norman Tebbit a couple of weeks ago...

You seem all too willing to dismiss anything printed in the Mail but all too keen to swallow hook, line and sinker anything The Guardian prints and everyone knows that the Guardian is nothing more than a propaganda machine for the liberal-left.
Hotairoi, The Guardian is but one source, others have also been quoted that debunk the Winterval myth. Clearly you haven't bothered to do any research whatsoever, which is your choice - but you're then in no position to keep spouting that the myth is correct. If you really do think you are right, then point to a source that backs the view up. Otherwise, stop trolling.

Strange how you use an obscure term (to which you are perfectly entitled to) to describe Christmas and then not expect any response and to refer Hetairoi's remarks as trolling is imo wrong.

Is that a Moomin?
Winterval is a cool word, I love how the language is in a state of constant evolution and flux. Its part of what makes English such a fun language to play with.
It such a good descriptive term for the time of the year as well, The Christmas Period always sounds like it should come with a large woolly jumper, box of chocs and a festive pack of tampax....

Not trolling just my opinion and no I do not have time to reserch things like this!

It is obvious from one of your posts that you and I are from a different generation and all I can assume is that your mind is more open to things that I consider unnecessary and annoying.

Is not the guardian going to defend critizism of the progressive train of thought that wants to nulify christmas.
As you say there was controversy back in the 90s where all public bodies decided it wasn't right to mention christmas. It was obvious that they didn't want to offend any minoritees even though the vast majority had no problems with Christmas and took no offence.
But isn't that the agenda on the left to cause divisions within this country
Just for keepsies.

"Is not the guardian going to defend critizism of the progressive train of thought that wants to nulify christmas."

Tee hee - i do likes a bit of nonsense i does.

Let's just break those bollocks down -

a)"Is not the guardian going to defend critizism of the progressive train of thought that wants to nulify christmas"
Quite apart from the typos, this sentence makes almost no sense at all. And you would have to remove the word 'almost' from the previous sentence to make the previous sentence make any sense at all.

b)"As you say"
That's not what he said at all, in fact quite the contrary.

c)"there was controversy back in the 90s where all public bodies decided it wasn't right to mention christmas"
That's just it, they didn't. Birmingham tried to save a bit of money on the marketing front by rolling all their 'seasonal' events into one promotion - putting the 'winter' of Winter together with the 'val' of Festival to create 'Winterval'. Rather than 'all' public bodies deciding anything, none followed suit.

d)"It was obvious that they didn't want to offend any minoritees even though the vast majority had no problems with Christmas and took no offence"
Christmas was named as 'Christmas' as part of the 'Winterval' calendar of events - it is obvious that you have not taken any time to see that that was the case. Hopefully more people will take this piece of information on board, so that the vast majority of people, who have been misinformed into thinking this episode was in any way connected with not wishing to cause offence, will find themselves in the minoritee.

e)"But isn't that the agenda on the left to cause divisions within this country"
Traditionally it has been the agenda of the left to end division within this country. On the whole it has been the agenda of the right to maintain divisions within this country.

But as phildo so accurately points out,

Thank you Withnial for the english lesson and I suppose I am lazy not to use spellcheck. My opinion has seemed to touch a raw nerve with you dissecting my prose line by line, oh well we all have our ways about us and that makes this forum interesting to members and lurkers a like. Would be a boring world if we all preached from the same agenda.

At Christmas time do you request
We celebrate this holy fest
With ‘all the trimmings’ -
Would this be the rule, Fox?

I’m sure it’s so,
Though i don’t know,
No ‘Winterval’
For you I trow –

I’m sure that you would
Truly be a Yule Fox,

Ruel Fox.
