wireless router

do you have virgin media cable internet, mrs. m, or a different internet provider?

if it is anyone else, then the ADSL router mentioned in the link andreas has provided is definitely your best bet.. that's an absolute bargain price for a real top of the range router!

if you have virgin, that means you have cable internet, so the above device will not work.. let us know if that's the case :)

Hi,
thanks for advice, yes I do have virgin media what should I get??
You need a non ADSL router. I use the one virgin supplied and have used similar offerings from netgear for a while - all very good.

I would personally recommend either the Netgear WGR614 or the one which i use these days the Netgear WGR614 54 MPBS.

There are many others available but those two are tried and tested by myself and I am happy to recommend them :)

In all honesty Mrs M, as long as it says it's for CABLE connections and not ADSL, then go for the best price you can find.
I know many people who have bought unknown brands for cheap and had every success with them, and at the same time i've also known plenty of expensive known brands to bugger up in the first few months.

It's a bit HIT & MISS, and although we could all recommend one make or another, that still wouldn't guarantee a trouble free service. Wireless networks can play up at the best of times!!

Can you not phone Virgin Media and ask for one of theirs? If you've been with them more than 12 months just say that other providers supply them for free and say you'll think about going elsewhere if they don't give you one. It usually does the trick! ;)

Thats sound advice, in fact I'd make that your first port of call.

Hi folks,
Well, I have just been chatting to my friendly 'Scottish'(nice surprise) Virgin media advisor and although I am on an XL package, I have to be on broadband XL (upgrading from 2Mb to 10Mb) to be getting a free wireless router which has cost me a WHOPPING £2 extra a month. Thanks for the advice. I will receive it in the next 5 to 7 days.

To be honest it's worth the extra £2 for the extra 8 Mbit anyway ;)

10 meg is now actually the slowest speed they offer, it's only existing customers on 2 meg that refuse to pay the £2 extra that can still have 2 meg.

Good luck in going wireless!! :)

The customer service at virgin isn't bad at all these days at all, I have to say I have been happy with the service have received so far from them.

Glad to hear you got it sorted, you've just paid £24 for a year of 5x faster broadband and a free router which would have cost you at least that on it's own anyway - back of the net!

can any of you forumites recommend a good inexpensive wireless router please.
Hey Mrs M...if it's for ADSL, have a look here!

:D
can't believe this thread has been going on so long, and not a single person has mentioned that the router i linked was, in fact, a cable router and not an ADSL one, as i originally claimed lol..

poor ol' g-unit went and bought one, only to get it home and find nowhere to plug his phone line in lol.. in my defence, the product details do state "RJ-11 and RJ-45 connection", which is clearly untrue.. anyway, the "half price" offer is over now, so it's not such a bargain anymore..
