Women described as guys

Whenever I turn the television on I almost invariably hear women referred to as guys.

I am left wondering if this in an attempt to negate the effect feminism has had on
us and is another method of playing down the role of women.

Please let me me know if you have an opinion on this. If the roles were reversed
and you are a man, would you like to be referred to as girls?

Many thanks....Ecker

A good friend of mine is a member of a Wild West society - there's nothing he likes better than an evening with a pair of rough, shaggy chaps.

There used to be lots of words in common usage, and there were some people who would never be described by some of the words, but it was very difficult to define the categories.

Men
Blokes
Chaps
Fellows
Guys
Gents
Lads
Boys

Women
Ladies
Birds
Chicks
Lasses
Girls

etc.

When a girl on the Hoe ( Plymouth ) comes up to you in a pretty frock ( dress ) and says "address me as your floozie", you know you have landed..

It's an Americanism and is unisex,
That would explain why teenage son, who watches lots of yankee programs, has suddenly started calling me & hubby 'You Guys'

I call everyone Chick, regardless of gender. As my boyfriend would say, "it must be a northern thing" lol :)

That ranks with 'Hon' ( as in short for honey I guess) which is rife in the potteries at the mo. Even the bloke in the oatcake shop calls me hon. It's not right.

good grief, you birds are never happy! you spend years burning bras 'n' shit so you can be "equal", then as soon as the world makes steps towards equilibrium by "unisexifying" divisive terms (e.g. "guys") you complain that it's removing your femininity! :teef:

seriously, though - as others have said, i think it's just a combination of the natural evolution of our language combined with its americanization [sic]..

when i lived in sheffield, all the blokes called everyone "love".. as in, even other blokes.. very strange seeing two gruff, burly northern men call each other "love" lol..

We were told off by our folks for calling them 'you guys.'
I tend to use it unisex if referring to a mixed sex group I suppose. Never really thought about it :)

I'd have had my block knocked off if I had even dared to call my parents that just once. (Should have seen their faces when hubby first met them & called them by their first names instead of Mr & Mrs........ . Even worse when he called my mum what he calls everyone...... 'Cock' :o )

I noticed on the Eurovision Song Contest, lots of the foreigners kept saying 'You Guys'.
