Another tip worth looking into is to book your tickets starting at a Welsh station say Wrexham. Travel is usually subsidised by the Welsh Assembley and can work out cheaper than booking from Stafford. Hoorah for devolution I say
It definitely was about 12 months ago!Not so sure thats the case !
Using the link on the London midland website I searched for stafford to Hereford, it sent us via Crewe. Shame the connection at Crewe was on an arriva south Wales train so we couldn't use it! Went to Liverpool instead.
Journey planners will pretty much always send you Hereford via Crewe as it is fastest journey time. But you can go all London Midland by going Stafford to New St then change for Hereford.Using the link on the London midland website I searched for stafford to Hereford, it sent us via Crewe. Hire a Deltic, park at Doxey sidings, borrow some red diesel, tupperware boxes, Tizer, featherlite, hot pants, princess risborough for tea
Another trick if you're making a particularly long journey but there and back on the same day, is to get a standard return to a station close enough to your destination that a cheap-day-return is offered.
For example, Stafford to Bristol has no cheap-day-return option; standard 30-day anytime return - £53.00
But Cheltenham Spa to Bristol does, £8.50
Stafford to Cheltenham Spa standard 30-day anytime return - £33.50
Total £42.00, saving £11.00

This is what happened when people hired a Class 47 a few weeks ago..Hire a Deltic, park at Doxey sidings, borrow some red diesel, tupperware boxes, Tizer, featherlite, hot pants, princess risborough for tea
