Do you consider all news agencies to be this way?
I suspect you mean "news
papers" and the TV news. News agencies like Reuters and the Press Association are usually fine, though there was a case a little while back of the Portuguese agency Lusa erroneously reporting that the McCanns had won a court case when in fact it had gone the other way (it is suspected that the McCanns' lawyer had deliberately fed them duff information).
The main role of the newspapers is to package (or spin) a story, usually from New Agencies, but often from PR agencies, in a way that fits in with their readership. They don't have the time to go delving into the facts. Their job is to present the story in such a way that their readership will keep buying their newspaper. More fool us if we do.
Anyone interested should have a read of "Flat Earth News" by Nick Davies. I'm sure I've seen it in Stafford Library, at least I did before it moved.
