Because it's cooler then and the slight volt drop is enough to trigger the alert.
Sometimes, they'll stop as they warm up, then start again the next night.
I knew a bloke who managed to convince himself that it was bats roosting in his attic.
I should have figured that out shouldn't I ? .... (Hits self on head with lump hammer.)
Tested experimentally by opening the blinds in the Radio Room (where the detector is.) It faces East so soon warms up dramatically on a clear sunny day like today. Sure enough, it's stopped beeping.

Now I'll have to wander down the village to get a new battery, but I think I'll wait until the Sun crosses the yard arm as the shop is next to the pub.
