Sadly reaching the age of de-cluttering and my cd collection is mainly taking up space and gathering dust. I've an inkling that i can transfer them to something called a 'stick' is this correct and is it possible to put them all on one 'stick'?..........

You need to rip them into another format, windows media player can do this. You then need to store them somewhere, and I have to say I'd never trust a USB stick as a long term storage device. Depends on size, and how often you want to access them really. Ideally you want a non-volatile storage like a few DVDs that you never use, just stick them in a drawer somewhere. Keep copies on your PC, as long as you don't mind playing them back from that?

Main thing to think about is how you want to play them back, do you mind using your PC every time you want to listen to music? There are many ways to get digital music into your speakers, and just as many different costs involved!

I am about to do the same after but will be ripping to flac format as it is lossless and more or less an exact copy of the CD, I then convert them to ogg format for my phone, because it takes less space and loses less quality than mp3.

If you are a bit of an audiophile then you may wish to consider flac but will probably mean you buying more sticks to store it all on. If you are not too bothered and want to cram as much as you can onto sticks without losing quality too much, I'd go for ogg.

I am assuming that your box reads flac and ogg.

This unit will not read the formats I suggested, however backing up the collection to dvd's in flac format is an idea if you are gonna shift the 400 + cd's

Possibly, the risk of going digital and disposing of a treasured cd collection is losing the digital versions through hardware failure, leccy spikes etc. Always have a backup.

I guess what you're saying is keep the originals in the loft space in the garage.....
