Accident on Newport Road - Tue 13th Mar 2012

Just near Tesco, not sure what happened but there are 2 air ambulances in attendance along with 6 or 7 police cars and an ambulance. Someone on a black scooter was down, didn't go close up as there were enough people already milling about. Came out of Tesco 25 mins later and there were loads of police/ambulance staff around.

Not sure why there were 2 helicopters though, as only one person on the vespa I'd assume (didn't see L plates). Unless they hit someone stepping onto the road?

Had a feeling it was that, seemed way too many people for a downed biker (I once had cars drive past gawping at me lying in the road, none of them stopped!). People do rush out there a lot though, the pedestrian crossing 50 feet away is just too much hassle for them. Maybe now Tesco have blocked the entrance off it will stop people doing it as much.

Think I just heard one take off again, means they've been on the ground nearly an hour. Can't be good :(

From what I've heard, they just took their time as there was a head injury involved - she should be ok though with any luck

(Edit: This isnt just wild speculation, I've spoken to someone who was with the girl before she went off)

I've just seen the helicopter take off. Took a photo of it when on the bowling green and a video of it taking off. Will post both later today.

The road was closed eastbound from the railway bridge to the Tesco lights while investigation is taking place. Don't know how long it will take, but it's pretty snarly going into town from Newport direction.

Avoid if possible.

Was stuck in the traffic outside this near the cinema saw the Air Ambulance take off. Hopefully who ever's involved is ok was a lot of people on the scene.

Didn't want to make a whole new topic for this - there's been a crash on the Cannock road, a car pulled out of overhill road and didnt see a KA by the looks of it. Cannock road is pretty heavy traffic. it might not be too much longer as it has been 45 minutes so far. they're still there atm though. I think everyone is OK but an ambulance and police are at the scene. avoid the cannock road for the next couple of hours if possible!

Thats what they told you, the duck was actually arrested under terrorism laws on suspicion of having a concealed camera.

Awww, I missed the helicopter because I was asleep! I live in Riverside Mews, about 40 metres from where that helicopter is and I can see Tesco from here! This sucks, not as much as being in an accident but still... :(

Thanks for the video bigbluewolf.

Had to happen at some point, everyone crosses there as its where the park puts you out. Closing the entrance at that end of Tesco may help, but that 8 foot fence is pointless when everyone hops the 3 foot wall next to it.

Afraid it did and I've voiced my opinion many times on people's behaviour on that stretch, mainly pedestrians as it happens. They extended the metal railings further along to state the obvious you shouldnt be crossing there, maybe they need to state the obvious a bit more!
I am sympathetic to anybody who gets badly injured but fron the picture in the E&S it looks like the girl was crossing between crossings. A shame and very avoidable for the sake of walking less than 20 yards to the crossing.
The extra path that Tesco put in near the car wash is easy enough to use - maybe it needs a big arrow advertising it is there.

I get really annoyed by the attitude that pedestrians come second to motorised traffic and that traffic has the ultimate right of way. Using a crossing is no guarantee of safety either - count how many cars go through any set of lights in Stafford on red, it's appalling. That whole area is crap for pedestrians because we mustn't delay motorists more than necessary must we?

Just because someone may have been crossing away from where you think they "should" have crossed doesn't make it all their fault.

Is that response aimed at my post?
If so, read it again and take note at my sympathy for the situation and basic common sense. Motor cyclist and pedestrian injured in an avoidable accident. Who said pedestrians come second? Pedestrians shouldnt walk in roads when theres traffic moving in the same way cars shouldnt drive on pavements. Basic self preservation and common sense.
I hope both make full recoveries and are not permanently scarred by the experience.
