Advice on sending parcels

Can anyone advise on the best way to send parcels please?

I need to send 3 boxes up to Edinburgh and they need to be there by Thursday or Friday.
Each box weighs approx 20 kilos and are 30cm x 30cm x 25cm.

The person who I am sending them to (my son) will be out of the house by lunchtime for the rest of the day. There may be someone else in the house but not guaranteed. He could pick them up from a location but as they are heavy and he doesn't have his car with him then he will need a taxi to take them home.

I have gone on the UPS website for a quote and its £43 for anytime delivery but if it's late in the afternoon then he won't be in.
Guaranteed before 10.30 am is £63 and before 9.00am is £126.

Does anyone know any other reliable companies that are more competitive please?

Has anyone used parcel monkey or parcels to go ... They are cheaper but wondered how reliable they are.

Best idea is to use parcel2go.

They are just a broker and have the best prices in the UK

On their site you can choose which carrier to use. Personally I would select DPD as they will text the recipient with an hour window for the delivery. If this is not convenient they can select either :

Deliver to Neighbour
Deliver to a DPD pickup point such as Halfords
Deliver to another address such as work etc.

If you choose DPD or UPS you will be using one of the two best carriers in the market at the moment.

Who did you choose to send the parcels @Carole? Did they arrive on time?
We went with my parcel delivery and they were picked up on the Wednesday by UPS for delivery on the Thurs.

My sons friend waited in the house but he didn't realise that there were 3 parcels so he didn't query it when only one parcel turned up.

I had been tracking the parcel and it said that the driver had attempted delivery but nobody was in so he had taken them to the nearest collection point.

I got in touch with the courier through live chat and he confirmed that all 3 parcels were at drop off point. I said that was impossible as one of them had been delivered. I also queried that if the driver said nobody was at home how come he had managed to deliver one parcel?

They said that they could re deliver but it wouldn't be until the next tues (nearly a week after they were collected).

My son and his friend went to collect in the end but as he didn't have his car with him and each parcel was 20 kilos, it wasn't ideal.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
So not a particularly successful delivery then. Shame.
