Did anyone see panorama the other night? Very scary programme on scientology! How can they claim it is a religion when they have to pay to pray!

The Beeb are repeating it on line, if you get chance I would try to watch it.

:mystery:

Damn, wanted to see that just to see the reporter lose it :D

On a side note, the catholic church always tries to get you to donate at ceremonies, and they're some of the richest buggers on the planet. I've always preferred agnostism, it doesn't cost anything to not give a damn.

Yeah! you need to see the rant in context. The Scientoligists posted the rant in an attempt to discredit Sweeney and the programme.

When you see what a menacing individual Ann Archer's (Fatal Attraction) son was, and take into account that Sweeney was intimidated, followed and investigated, you can understand why he flipped! In the same circumstances I would have flipped alot earlier. That surprises no one, Ed

In the interests of balance, Mr Sweeney was investigating The Church(?) and was likely to produce a programme that criticised it.

The programme succeeded in confirming my predjudice that this is not really a religion, is deeply suspect, and potentially dangerous.

Considering that L Ron Hubbard himself admitted that he set up Scientology as a result of a bet with Azimov that he couldn't start a religion how stupid do you need to be to be a Scientologist...oh! American perhaps!!!!

I heard it was Bruce Sterling.
AIUI, the substance of the bet was that two writers (Hubbard and someone else) would each try to set up a religion, and have a bet on whose would be biggest after a few years. Hubbard started Scientology.

A few years later, but still well before the closing date of the bet, the other writer went to Hubbard, gave him the money and said, "I give up. You win."

4000th post? Whatever, I'm nonchalant..
in today's metro it talks of the teachings of scientology - they believe that 75million years ago an evil warlord called Xenu rounded up 135trillion beings from the galaxy, dumped them on volcanoes on the Earth, then vapourised them with nuclear bombs and their radioactive souls, later attached themselves to human beings and are apparently the root of all global problems.

it also said founder L Ron Hubbard is a science fiction writer.

If you haven't seen the relevent episode of South Park, I'd recommend that as well. It has a very informative 'public information style' section in the middle all about the specific beliefs that Scientologists follow. Crazy crazy stuff... :)

There's a link to it here... http://www.xenu.net/

Not that I'm a scientologist or anything, but I caught it on youtube some days ago, before I did, I watched this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9psX5SlXb_g

which is a "Scientology Documentary on BBC Panorama program" from their perspective, three parts, well produced and offers some questions about Mr Sweeny's methods.

My religous affiliation, strictly a Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, man, more details here

Scientology scares me. How can it be considered a 'religion' when religions tend to denounce anything even remotely scientific? (final year high school biology, being taught the theory of evolution by a devout Christian - fun times! :P )
A few years ago I was a accosted in Melbourne's CBD by a scientologist, who gave me a helium filled balloon before directing me across the street to the Town Hall, where apparently they were having a little exhibition.
(I didnt go. I kept the balloon though.)

Cuffy is the new skill
ive been accosted by scientologists both on new street in birmingham, and on tottenham court road in Londinium where their headquarters are.

both times some girl approached me and asked me if i was 'stressed'. when i said no she went, 'are you sure?'
she was offering some sort of massage/talk. hang on, if id said yes maybe i could have been 'massaged' by a ex-12 foot lizard! :teef:

From memory, it went something like this:

Mr. D [bristle] 'State school curriculum states that I have to teach you this, and as you should all be aware I do not believe that any of these theories are true. '[/bristle]

And after that, everytime a new subtopic came up regarding evolution, he would repeat 'I do not believe any of this, but regardless ...' I dont think anyone actually tried to pull his chain too much by asking questions about how could Christianity be right unless Adam and Eve were treedwellers. Despite his 'Christian Fish' meetings at school once a week, he was actually a pretty cool teacher that most of us respected.
