Anyone thinking of buying an iPad?

Ah, I thought the iPad had a slower processor for some reason.... 1GHz isn't too bad I suppose.....

I do think that Android tablets will be better then the iPad though just because the choice of hardware will be a lot less limited (i.e. with the different manufacturers we should get a selection of screen sizes, USB ports on the device, wi-fi and mobile connectivity for a reasonable price etc...
But with all these differences in hardware you start to get incompatibility issues which can be annoying.... Scaling on different size and resolutions is one that instantly comes to mind!

Maybe i'm over simplifying things here, but there don't seem to be any issues with different phone hardware (i.e. different screen sizes, different processors, RAM etc).

True, there are a lot of different spec android phones already. I'd expect apple had more problems making a bigger iphone than android will have upscaling.

Depends really. Apple have made a higher-res iPhone 4 (Retina Display they are calling it, which incidentally I dislike as its just a high res screen with a higher pixel density, nothing that ground breaking) at an exact factor of 4, so 1 pixel in the old phone exactly matches 4 in the new, so the display will not look any different on original apps. The problems come when you start mixing 4:3, 16:9 factors etc. as apps may not actually appear as the app developer intended. (Think about when 16:9 wide-screen TVs were introduced and everyone hated them as they said everyone looked fat! It was simply a scaling problem!)

That's my understanding anyway.

If anyone can't afford an ipad, an Archos android version is available for £99 now:

http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/15573327/Archos-7-Home-Tablet-8GB/Product.html?P36=PDBN8U&affid=hotukdeals&awc=buyat&_$ja=tsid:11516|prd:hotukdeals

Forum here about rooting it, as Archos don't give you full marketplace access. Hey, its just like apple, you have to hack it to make it function properly ;)

My colleague seems to think I need an ipad to show off our wonderful work in meetings seeing as we have some pretty pictures now

Having just read this older thread is there anything new on the market that matches the ipad ( or beats it ) ?

In meetings I'd use a projector to show off your pretty images. For the price of an iPad (circa £500) you'll get a pretty decent projector.

Yeah, but the cool kids don't use projectors. They use very large iphones.

Talking to a work colleague who loves apple and all its incarnations, and currently has 2 iphones on his desk (3GS and 4), and he thinks the ipad is useless. We have 2 at work, he borrowed one for a week but just couldn't see the point. Then again, he was never in a position where he needed several people to look at his phone. I suppose to show off pictures it could be useful, just not sure its £500 useful!

Aye, when on location and it's appropriate, I take my laptop. I'm interested in the iPad though, it's a damned sexy bit of kit, although not £500 sexy! In fact you could by serious sexy time for £500 ;)

Will see if I can think of a use for one at work and get them to buy me one. Any suggestions?

To make everyone think your cool in business meetings? At least until the iPad 2 comes out, then you'll be a social leper ;)

I"m finding that I'm going to see clients more and more and having to go through technical drawings onscreen with them. The gestures on the trackpad on my laptop are invaluable for easy navigation of large drawings. The touch screen capabilities of the iPad would simplify this further. And look damned impressive. That seems reasonable, will pitch it tomorrow.

I tell you something though, if they bring out a 15 or 17 inch version of the iPad I'd buy one tomorrow.

Just read that DSGi (Dixons Group) will be selling an Advent Android tablet called the Vega in time for Christmas... priced at £249.

They will stock another one called the Amico too at £130 but the Vega is better as follows:

Far more interesting is the second device, the Vega. Priced at £249.99, the Vega packs the punch that the Amico is missing. Highlights include a 10.1" CAPACITIVE touchscreen, a 1GHz NVidia Tegra chipset and Android 2.2.

Full specs...

Built-in 3G broadband SIM card slot: yes

To be honest, these specs read like a wish list of what many of us would want in a tablet device. The latest Android release, the powerful Tegra chipset, 6.5 hours of 1080P playback and, working on the assumption that the specifications are correct, integrated 3G?!? [edit: I think we'll probably get the SIM slot but no 3G hardware]. Providing the device can perform to the sum of it's parts, it could be a winner against the either inferior specified or hugely more expensive (i'm looking at YOU Galaxy Tab!) rivals.
