Is it really worth going to any hassle over this?

Not like there's a shortage of alternative supermarkets in town.

I don't get the hate over Asda charging a (refundable) parking charge.

Sainsbury's have charged forever and people parked, bought a ticket, did their shopping.

    What's the difference?

Not a lot. Guess why I went to Asda a lot more than Sainbury. Tend to avoid Tesco as they have had a habit of getting arsey with people filling up bikes while wearing crash helmets.

    All the best

There was serious(?) talk once about making it illegal to wear a crash helmet in a fuel station, which would have made entering and leaving interesting, where wearing would be suddenly compulsory on a highway and instantly illegal as the line was crossed..

It's not the charge people object to; it's the hassle you have to go to to get the money back. Sainsbury's will give you either the cash or money off your bill at the till. With Asda if you want the cash back (so you've got change for parking next time) you have to go to Customer Services, so have to queue up twice. It's a stupid system.

You also have to pay on a Sunday, unlike Sainsbury's. I wasn't aware of this until I went last Sunday to get a prescription after visiting the OOH's GP. So I hobbled to the pay machine, then to the pharmacy only to find they didn't have the product in stock, and then had to queue up to get my £1 back, before going elsewhere. Had I known there was a charge on Sunday I would've just gone to Tesco or Sainsbury's and saved myself a lot of extra pain and hassle!

Yeah I dont mind paying, I am actually for it, but bloody hell, allow me to use a card, preferably contactless. I am like the queen, I rarely carry cash.

That’s a whole other can of worms - brand new ticket machines and they don’t even accept contactless?

Kind of half baked thing I would be surprised if it was suggested!

    Right. Ok then.

So from the previous replies, it seems like I'm in a minority.

Each to their own, but I personally don't find it massively inconvenient to be organised enough to always have on hand at least £5 in coins for the occasions when one might need them.

Most people seem to be complaining about not getting cash back so they can use it next time.
What do they do at a "Normal" car park where they don't get the parking charge refunded?

"normal" carparks tend to be free or give multiple payment options coins/notes/ card/ contactless. the last normal carpark I used I paid with android pay. The issue for me is that I very rarely pay with cash everything goes on the credit card it can be many months before I get a pound coin to put in the machine. at least at Sainsbury, I get the coins back in my hand so I can chuck it in the ashtray ready for its next use.

I bring good news! A quick chat with the kiosk staff today at Asda has revealed that they intend to scrap the parking charge soon (possibly next week). Going back to 2 hours free (maybe they’re keeping the charge for over 2?)

    So much for that.

That suggests to me it had a rather negative impact on customer numbers and satisfaction.

The whole system was stupid. Like others here, I rarely carry cash as a card/phone as means of payment is easy.

As it happens, there’s a rather large group of people who advocate simply ignoring the charges, and any penalty notices, as they rarely get chased up.
