B&Q Stafford - Not a clue

natter

A few posts under my belt
Went to B&Q the other day for some wood paint, and saw the valsper range they are now doing.

They said with there premium wood and metal paint no primer is required? I said no primer on wood before you paint? she said yes, its a new paint, you dont need primer,

So I asked to look at the tin, and what did it say. 'ensure your surface is primed prior to painting' I pojnted this to her, and even though it was adamant on the tin you needed primer, she was having none of it. So i pulled over one of the other staff and asked the same question, OMG, why did i bother asking, in a ' I can't be bothered with anything at all type of voice' I dunna know. he replied.

How do some people get a job!!!!!!! no product knowledge, no customer service skills!

Do you know the names of the people that you spoke to? Or have a description of them?

In the old days, Valspar was probably the best paint, but I suspect it's just somebody "utilising the brand identity" now.

There is a poster outside B&Q advertising vacancies in their staff profile - get in there.

I have an enormous B&Q near me - the store is so big that staff just don't know where anything is and there are just too many products for staff to know everything about. I have given up asking for advice and do my own research before I go into store.

On the upside if you want customer service I would suggest going to Homebase - they are trying to be the John Lewis of the DIY world and have a 'greeter' by the doors as you enter....

However you end up paying for it! B&Q is far cheaper!

Valspar have recently had a big push on their paint in B&Q stores with extensive staff training.
@natter - the label on the tin states "for best results seal new, bare wood surfaces with Valspar interior Primer and undercoat". I'm reliably told that you don't have to prime or undercoat, but for best results you should :) I have passed on your message about the staffs attitude, hope that helps.

@That-Crazy-Rat-Lady In B&Q each section has a Trader Manager - they should hopefully know all about the stock in their section, however it would be impossible for each member of staff to know everything about the thousands of lines that they carry - don't go to Homebase ......booooo they're the enemy!

@littleme I agree - I would never go to Homebase - the prices are extortionate!

It would be impossible for all staff to know everything! The problem is when the Trade Manager isn't there!

I would just rather the assistant said 'I'm sorry I don't know the answer to that question' rather than bullshitting it...

I find the B&Q staff quite OK - there's often a chap hovering by the entrance who does look like a bouncer - I usually ask him if he's enforcing the dress code...

I have to say my experience of the staff out in the store has been excellent, they have seen me struggling and took me to the item that I was looking for. The people on the tills, they are a little over zealous and impatient.

I do hate the hideous, hectoring voice on the self-checkout - "DON'T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR GOODS!!!" - "I won't, just print the farking receipt and then I'll pick them up."

Etc......

He is the greeter :)

B&Q also run DIY courses for the public & also kids courses in larger stores...

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
I once had to observe the early morning ( on wooden removable steps ) company song by all staff members..

Is B & Q a cult?

Or have I had one too many Kingfisher beers?

Off topic but coming up to Christmas my dad noticed that the Q on the B&Q sign was not lit up. Not a very good advert for their light bulb aisle...
