Beware mobile phone scam, it could happen anywhere

On Monday 22nd July, a Nigerian male was arrested in South Staffs on suspicion of fraud. It would appear he was part of a crime gang carrying out a sophisticated fraud involving on-line purchases of mobile phones. The phones are ordered by this gang and delivered to unsuspecting members of public to their homes by courier. On this occasion it was UK MAIL. Shortly afterward, the unsuspecting person receives a telephone call from another male pretending to be UK MAIL. He apologises for the delivery stating it is a mistake and that arrangements will be made for the collection.
The parcels containing 3 expensive mobile phones are then collected by the criminals and this could leave the unsuspecting innocent persons with a bill for the phones. It may be they are liable also as they have signed for the delivery.
On this occasion the male was detained trying to collect the parcel of phones because the member of public became suspicious. When arrested the male was in possession of a parcel containing 3 phones which he had collected earlier in the day. He also had an address to collect from after. He therefore could have collected 3 parcels containing 3 phones to the value of £1500. Therefore a total of £4500 in one day.
Anyone who should receive an unexpected parcel and a phone call explaining the mistake and arranging collection of said parcel should contact the police.
