I have recently stopped smoking and am looking at doing something worth while to raise money for chairty. I have always enjoyed cycling and was wondering how i would go about doing such a thing, also does anyone know of any long routes that would be possible and also how would i go about getting a bike donated to help in my jaunt.
Thanks

Hi Seanyboo

The London to Brighton bike ride takes place on June 15. You can register now and entries open in December. That is about 53 miles and brilliant. You are too late to go into the ballot for next year's Ride London 100 but you can get a charity place. Most of the charity places ask you to raise about £750. That takes place in August.

Locally, keep an eye out for the Katharine House ride with route choices of 60 and 30 miles. For that you pay an entry fee and are encouraged to raise what you can to support the hospice. That us usually some time in May, as is the Route 66/33 which is organised by Nova Raiders in Newport.

If you enjoy cycling with others and discovering new rides, register now with Sky Ride Local. The Sky Rides have finished for the winter but will resume in April. They are free, local, hugely enjoyable and you meet some of the nicest forumites ;)

hi Seanyboo,
You don't need anything more than a basic reliable bike to train on. If you are going to make a convincing case to potential sponsors that you are worth backing then you are going to have to demonstrate to them that you, yourself, have already made an investment of some sort ; certainly something more than a vague statement of intent.
Given the cost of cigarettes today, your abstinence should already have saved you enough in one week to purchase a reliable basic bike from Back2bikes. Buy such a bike, start pedalling, and in a few weeks/months time you will either have given up the whole idea or, hopefully, have a clear idea of what you might realistically achieve and the evidence to put before potential sponsors.
Good luck!
