Car condensation problem!

is it normal to get condensation on the inside of a new car? ms. dirtybobby bought herself a brand new peugeot 107 last march, and all through the winter she's found herself having to mop the inside of the windscreen any time she wants to go anywhere! even worse, if it's really cold out then this condensation freezes, and she can't go anywhere without leaving the car running for half an hour, as the heater desperately tries to defrost the inside of her windscreen!

i'm convinced this is not normal, but the car has just got back from peugeot today and they say they can't find any fault! before she took it in, she got autoglass to replace the whole windscreen.. they ran a "water test" after doing so, and couldn't find any fault either..

we're not talking a thin mist of moisture here.. it's proper, dripping condensation - once she's done mopping it up you can literally wring the cloth out with the water it's absorbed! am i expecting too much? is this normal behaviour? surely if it carries on her upholstery will start to go moldy, or even the electrics could be affected?

help please :meh:

even with my non-existent car history and woeful knowledge of all things mechanical and car related....no, that doesnt seem right at all.

I too suffer the same problem of condensation but I know exactly why mine happens.

Last summer, on a day that was wonderful and hot, I opened my car sunroof. When we returned to the camp site I left it open to keep the car cool. We got very merrily hammered around the camp fire and collapsed into our tents. The following morning we noticed that it had poured with rain during the night and my seats were wet. Thought that they had dried out enough to use the car and all was well.......until you add heat! When the heaters are on the whole windscreen and and all the other windows steam up and as you say it literally drips with moisture. Therefore, I wonder if it got wet inside prior to her buying it. I know you say it's new but these "new" cars often hang around a bit even before they get registered.

Just a thought!

Have you felt the rear footwell carpets? And the boot carpet?

107/C1/Aygo is prone to leaky seals.. I've seen a couple now.

Welcome to my world. Though my car is 10 yrs old, it still takes me longer to de-ice the inside than the outside. My only thoughts, the mistake made is choice of car, had an uncle worked for Peugeot i've heard the inside truths.
Though not having the same trouble with the new Audi A5 I've got for the week, surprisingly.

thanks for the suggestion, but that's not it.. this condensation only appears on cold days, and if it's frosty it turns to a sheet of solid ice :(

what should i be feeling for in the footwells? as i say, peugeot (next to zanzibar) have had it in for a few hours today, and say they can't find fault.. presumably you work in "the industry" - do you have any suggestions as to how we should pursue this with them? any way i can prove the fault to them, beyond telling them to keep it overnight and hope that it's cold the following morning?? lol

exactly, you don't expect from a car that was brand new off the production line less than a year ago!

i wouldn't buy a peugeot myself, but in its defence it is a great little car.. and perfect for the even littler ms. dirtybobby :)

Yup, used to work next to a yard when I was in Southampton. Although that was Rover I think, so probably empty now! Loads of new cars sat around for a while before being shifted, used to like the jap import yard best. Loads of evos being driven stupidly by blokes with silly grins. 5mph limit, yeah right! Your brand new car may only have 25 miles on it, but for those 25 it was ragged stupid :D

Sorry, I should've been clearer. I know you say they had leak tested it. But have you checked the rear carpets to make sure they're not wet to touch. Push down on them quite hard, the water will come up through the carpet. (It;s all held in the sound deadening foam underneath.)

Same in the boot... lift the boot carpet up, check to see if there's any water in the spare wheel well.

I am in the trade, (I don't work for Mike Thompsons by the way). We haven't had condensation problems with them, but have had a few water leaks, which I suppose would cause dampness on the inside of windows.

That is really what I was getting at......

Condensation is formed when water evaporates onto cold glass so....

you need to find the source of the water. It could be leaking from the heater element as well.

If you turn on the air con whilst trying to clear the condensation it works a hell of a lot quicker.

she hasn't got air con, just regular hot/cold air blowers - and of course she has these on full pelt during her morning de-moistening!

i'm hoping for a cure for the cause tbh.. thanks for all your suggestions, wildwood - i'll check all that out over the weekend :)

I've had this problem this winter. The solution for mine, was to crank up the fans etc. but open one of the windows a fraction, for some reason it works.

I do have theories about in or outside temperatures but I won't bother you with that shite.

By the way dirtybobby, i fancy you.

I too have this problem but my car is a 9 years old Citroen Saxo.... I used to get a pool of water in drivers and back seat foot wells but this has stopped now so don't know if that has something to do with it but I get the iced up windowscreen inside.

Very annoying but I just put up with it having an old car....
