Hi I have to find a carehome with nursing care in Stafford for my 90 year old mum who has dementia plus other health problems. Has anyone recommendation for homes and which if any to avoid. It's a minefield and I'd be really grateful for any help in making a difficult decision easier. Thanks

I think Northfield Village is the newest dementia care 'hub', you may be able to get more information there...

www.staffordshire.gov.uk/health/redevelopment-sites/stoneroaddevelopment.aspx

www.choiceshousing.co.uk/dementia-Care.aspx

Also, whilst sat in Holmcroft Rd Drs surgery the other day I noticed a large pinboard which gave details of a website that had lot's of reviews, information & help in deciding on a care home for relatives....I didn't take *note of the address though unfortunately, but I suppose all Drs will have the same information....

*It wasn't really relevant to me as my elderly parents have recently informed me that they are planning a trip to some Dignitas type place in Canada before the dementia sets in!?!

I take it you have a social worker and cpn? Has your mum been in St. Georges for a full diagnosis? Has she ever been held under section 3 of the mental health act? If so, she is entitled to 117 after care. Soooo many questions! Limewoods is a relatively new home, a lot of patients suffering from dementia have been accepted there lately.

I'd like to give you my honest opinion of care homes for those with dementia in Stafford but I fear they may be libellous :(. From my long and very recent experience they, in the main, are diabolical, even the supposed 'best ones' sadly. Most are 'for profit' which is, as suggested, private firms making profit by basically caring for our most vulnerable as cheaply as possible. The standard of care I have witnessed has made me sob, it's just too sad.

I've visited every nursing home for Dementia suffers in Stafford in the last 6 months and the only ones I'd go near are St Joseph's (they only take dementia without mobility, so are no good if your relative can walk unaided) and the Weston & Queensway one. I genuinely can't type what I thought of the others :(

Best advice I have is go and see how they actually CARE for the people, don't be blinded by posh new buildings and furnishings. Look at the staff profile, the company or whoever that runs them. Don't be scared to be very very demanding and don't be fobbed off. Sorry if I sound bitter but I am, and the institutional neglect of our elderly has shocked me to the core :(

Be honest love. A lot of our patients go out of area, due to family wanting them nearby, obviously. A few end up in homes either in Stafford or as close to as possible.

Father In Law spent his last six months in Standon Hall where he was looked after well . The Beeches Dementia care annex.

My nan was diagnosed with dementia approximately 10 years ago. Her treatment ever since has been appalling. She was sectioned for a number of months (possibly up to nearly a year) in St Georges, before being placed in a number of ill equipped care homes in Stafford. My nan now resides in a care home in Burton, which is currently being investigated because of complaints about its poor treatment of residents. My nan and all her family live in Stafford. Because of the distance to Burton and the limited visiting times, my mother and aunty are only able to see my nan once a week for a couple of hours. I have not seen my nan for a couple of years. That is the same situation for other family members that work Monday to Friday 9-5.

I would dearly love to bring my nan back to Stafford, however I am afraid that doing so will probably kill her.

I believe a society should be judged on how it treats the most vulnerable in society. Sadly, my nan (and her family) have been badly let down.

Thanks everyone. It's a nightmare. Limewood is very expensive and if you are funded by Soc service and health you have to pay the difference- called top up.

Yes my mum has had the diagnosis and has a social worker, etc.
There's maple court; st josephs has recently been sold, so I don't know if it's good or bad; Weston house doesn't seem to have vacancies very often.

Any advice on places is welcome

All I can say is good luck. Navigating the system is a minefield with no-one really able to provide genuine help. The system is so disjointed and underfunded that I'm convinced that by the time we know what we need to know it'll be too late. If your relative needs nursing care my understanding is that you can get full funding for this, different from the Social services funding which is a pittance and doesn't cover any decent care home, it barely covers a shit one :(

Is Maple Court the one up by Rowley Park? When we went it smelt of urine which wasn't a good start. We weren't impressed to be fair. Plus it's making a profit for shareholders. To my mind care for the elderly should focus on care, not profit.

We went out of area for a while and found another midlands council far more helpful and organised than Staffs County Council - shock horror!! Infact it was the other council who finally organised our relative's funding within Staffs, not Staffs CC who are a compete shambles!!!

Good luck, I'll help f I can but this has easily been the most distressing period of my families' lives.

Maple Court and Maple Lodge are adjacent and both in Rowley Park.

I don't have much to offer, but my grandad was cared for with great understanding and compassion in Wheaton Aston, not Stafford I know but not many miles away. It must be a very difficult time.

.

My dad was in Maple Court for a short time , before being rushed to hospital in a terrible condition . The staff in Stafford Hospital reckoned he must have been severely neglected in that home and were looking into it.When he came out he was sent to The Conifers in Great Wyrley.

My relative also got rushed in to intensive care from a well regarded care home (not in Staffs), and was in ICU for days. Bizarrely it seems that should a patient from a CARE home end up in hospital due to absolute and provable neglect nothing is done, not a report, not an inspection , not an investigation. Absolutely jack sh*t.......

For obvious reasons I can't say too much, But, we have had patients come into us with Grade 2 and more severe pressure sores, and that's from nursing homes. What makes us laugh tho is, the homes can't cope when the person becomes ill (psychotic etc). It's just normal behaviour to us.

My nan was in maple court for a short time. They were unable to deal with my nan. Not sure why. She was transferred to another care home. However, sadly it wasn't much better.

I don't care if a care home is profit orientated or a non profit organisation I just want the best care for my loved ones.
