Had a wonder into C.Ex on Saturday.....had a distinct smell of an abattoir or a butchers shop.

CEX is a little different I feel - focusing on DVD's, Games, Phones and the like - consumable things that are often done with or upgraded - they don't take jewelry, or offer financial services.

I know this is wishful thinking but don't you think that our council should have some moral duty to keep out companies like bright house that have an extortionate interest rate out of our town

The French did this. They refused to issue them a license to trade, when they tried to open there.

Just been to the CEX website, the new shop which has opened next to Superdrug.

They basically seem to offer you peanuts for your item, then mark it up by a factor of 3.

You would have to be desperate to accept their low offer unless of course you had not paid for the item in the first place.

To be fair, I have sold a lot of my old mobile phones to CEX in the past. They don't offer the best rates, usually a bit less than the online recyclers, but the beauty is you can drop it off in person and get the cash straight away once they have checked the item over which usually takes an hour.

Ok they will try blagging you saying "we don't have enough cash, you can have store credit instead" which in turn will get you buying their overpriced goods, but if you stand firm, or just double check before you hand the phone in "you definitely have cash to buy this off me today" and it should be ok.

Carrying on from the point above though, I would never BUY anything from them though (except on a very odd occasion), they are so expensive in there it is unreal for what is essentially second hand crap. You can get the occasional bargain - I got a Sky HD box for £35 once as it was an old model - but the laptops and stuff they sell - you can usually get better online brand new for not much more money with coupons and cashback etc.

Bought Sherlock DVD's three series for less than a fiver, I use CEX regularly and will continue to do so.

Not sure Kays ever got away with charging a 400% markup!
Indeed not but the principle is the same.

The new breed are allowed to get away with extortionate rates due to deregulation of the finance industry buy whichever government it was.

Loan sharks are now legally allowed to prosper because of deregulation and the government wonder why people get into deeper debt and in the same way the betting industry has been deregulated and then the same government wonder why people are addicted to gambling.

Yeah unfortunately my mate "worked" in cash generators and just been made redundant :-( sad times, I recon the new shopping centre supposedly meant to be built next year will eventually end up derelict even before it's been built!

I think these kinds of shops make it easy for burglars to quickly convert stolen goods into cash.

Anyone use these type shops? Do they check much on if the property is actually yours? What's the legal position if you are burgled and find your stuff in there? Does the store get done for handling stolen goods?

Went in CEX and overheard someone say they had got something from Cash Generator and then sold it for more in CEX.

Notice The Works has gone, only the one in Stafford their other nearby shops are still open

They check and record ID but probably the standards of proof are very low

Probably you can have it back if you can prove its yours. But who can do that?

Does the store get done for handling stolen goods?
As long as the shop/staff don't believe it's stolen they're not breaking the law
