I posted some ramble on here when I started on the forum about front room part time pubs... Radio 4 had a feature on something similar, small range of beers, no shorts, one wine, 30 people max
Low overheads, no staff, very very localised

Applied for change of use says the letter, the bloke moved a load of double beds in there yesterday, and this afternoon eccleshall fencing were there n all. The same people have been doing the house next door up too (no2). We have students 3 doors away who have parties and play loud music till 6.30 in the mornings sometimes,I ain't no nimby but I don't need it from both sides, specially when I have get up at 6.30am mesen for work. Called the police to those up the road 1 night, they waited till the coppers had gone then it started up again. The Tavern seemed ok when Ash had it,but once it took on the look of a wine bar it went reet weird,I were told by the general manager that the owner was askin too high a rent for the place.

Great idea. Turn the Castle into a dozen front room pubs. Pub crawl in the rain without getting wet...

Simple.

Get Environmental Health involved, they get called out too many times and the students will find themselves hi-fi less. :)

Dear Neighbour,

Re – 1 Doxey Road, Stafford ST16 2EW Odysseus Greek Restaurant (Now Closed)

We have had an informal meeting with Councillor T Harris and outlined out intentions, in principal he said he would support our application.
surely this is a bit shady/legal grey-area? if these plans haven't been approved in any way, one would have thought a councillor officially voicing their support, "in principal" or otherwise, wouldn't be allowed :?:

There is no way any development would get planning permission without providing parking, never mind a six bed 'house of multiple occupancy'. He must know this so I am suspicious that this is just the usual -submit a hopeless application first, to get the one you really want after- trick.
He may be planning a couple of flats but thinks if he puts in this terrible plan first it will look like he is being ever so good when he applies for the real one.
Same for Doxey, at the community planning meeting the council stated that parking wouldn't be considered, as a matter of fact the owners wanted to covert the beer garden into 8 parking spaces but the council said no and now there will be 2-4 I think. The planning department are the biggest bunch of morans, they make Stafford Hospital look like a blue chip company featured in the FTSE 100

I just happened to walk past the owner of the building whilst he was talking to a couple of chaps and he said "If you're happy to go ahead with this, and your word is your honour....". Hmmm.....veeeeeeeeeeeery interesting. I have a strong feeling that this will be turned back into a restaurant (which will prob fail due to the building owner's input) in the very near future.

He gets rent up front, the business fails, they continue to pay rent and he prospers. Sound familiar? It's been pretty much the same since I've known the place. Allegedly.

edit: added an 'r'

I think the greek place failed cos it wasn't very good, rather than the owners input, but as far as the Castle Tavern is concerned you're bang on.

I think that particular one was 50/50. The owner only gave a shit about the money, and the restauranteur thought he could blag it off the back of their apparently-successful restaurant in Burton. Doesn't work like that.

but as far as the Castle Tavern is concerned you're bang on
Defo. I'd put money on it being open within a month.

Disappointed the place is empty, disappointed people want to venture into things away from a tradition that worked for years and disappointed I go past an eye sore every day that's been part of the area's history, heritage and community.

Surely thare has to be somebody out there to make a success of a business that can attract, local, passing and town centre trade.

I just hope it opens as a proper pub again, not as the wine bar they tried turn it into. And proper bar staff, not grovelly ones like the bar manager was after Ash left. Yes sir,no sir 3 bags full sir etc.
Ash was making a cracking go of the place then the owner stepped in and wanted his cut,no doubt he will be along soon and tell us all different, but Ash told a mate of mine what were going on,and obviously he told me!

Seconded. It was awful. I am surprised to hear that the guy had a successful restaurant somewhere else. A Greek one? It seemed to be run by people with very little experience even of eating Greek food, let alone of running a restaurant. We spent one evening there which was hugely enjoyable, mostly because we were laughing at the jaw-dropping awfulness of the whole thing. The food...the waitress who freely admitted she hadn't a clue about anything on the menu...the courses arriving in a seemingly random order...the disco. And it failed? Who could have seen that one coming?
