That is an absolutely disgusting way for the owners to behave.

I can understand the business need to keep matters to themselves.
If you make it known to employees, that the business is in dire trouble, employees understandably have to look after number one, and often leave, making it more difficult to trade.
The owners are often negotiating the position with creditors right up to the last moment hoping for a reprieve, that rarely comes.

But to lay staff off by text message - that stinks - scumbags - I dont know how they sleep at night.

Edit - business generalisation here, no business knowledge of the Chambers situation itself.
Speak65
You do not know all the FACTS. See my earlier posting for an explanation of why a group text message was sent.
It was impossible to arrange to meet all the staff at such short notice. If you wish to call us "scumbags" then both myself and Norman are more than happy to meet with you face to face at a convenient time and place to discuss this further
So it was impossible to text all to arrange an emergency meeting?
I feel for your situation, and am sure you did everything to avoid the final conclusion, but 16 peoples lives have been effected by the impersonable method of such news via text message.
For each and every one of them, this could have a masssive effect on their lives.
These are employees that had loyalty to you, but you felt that you were unable to bestow on them the decency of giving them this terrible news to their faces.
As an owner of the business, I believe you have a moral responsibility for your employees. These are the people who in better times, would be doing the work to make profits for you.

And yes - I do wish to call you scumbags as I feel there were honourable ways you could have delivered this news to your employees. 16 employees - not 1600 or 16,000 - it would have been possible, perhaps not easy but possible, but it is not an option you chose to take.

As for your offer of meeting - it cries to me of a "come outside and we'll sort this out".
Thanks for the invite, but I don't do business that way.
No neither do we but we don't hide behind a forum to insult people and would never resort to that
behaviour if we knew all the facts or in your case if not.

Quite ironic that - I am hiding behind a forum for expressing a point of view on an existing subject, but you weren't hiding behind a text message to deliver devastating news?????????

Well we went to The Fox as mentioned (it's our anniversary) and it WAS full. We waited an hour and got a table. And it was wonderful. And I had the bread and butter pudding with apricot sauce. And now I'm a little bit drunk and sort of dizzy.

First off, welcome to Stafford Forum jeffers4591! As we all know, there are at least 2 sides to every story, so I'm pleased that you're on here participating with the conversation and putting your side of things across.

Secondly, I think it's fair to remember that jeffers4591 could quite easily have disappeared into the night and swept it under the carpet, so let's please not get casting aspersions unnecessarily when he's willing to respond to all matters raised. I'm sure nobody involved (owners or staff) wanted this to happen!

:)

No idea how Dennis will claw back his million at the Post House

It would take 100,000 ten pound meals to do it

Who pays more than that in Stafford?

Not many

Not many at all
In actual fact if you take a ten pound meal and take into account VAT which is paid directly to the
government i.e. giving a business £8.33 net and then apply a gross profit percentage of around 65% which is what you will make at best these days i.e. £5.41 and then ignore ALL other running costs that you mention it will take 184,842 ten pound meals to do it.

Easy isn't it ????
It has me at a loss too
Maybe he has the lee-way of doing it with his own money and at his own pace. Businesses that have to dance to the tune of the money-lenders may be more constrained...

We opted for The Swan with 2 necks. Heaving, but got table as it was early. Very similar food wise to the fox but m'lady liked being able to have a cocktail.

Is this the pub / restaurant heading out Lichfield way?
We have never been, but sounds like we should give it a go.

It is, technically, in Chetwynd Aston. That place seems to consist of a few houses and The Fox. Take the A41 towards Wolverhampton at the Mere Park roundabout at Newport. Carry on the A41 at what was Focus. Take next right. Go past the restaurant which is usually closed and look for the full car park a bit further on. You have to put your name down for a table and drink at the bar. That was where I went wrong. I don't normally drink very much. It is fantastic food and lovely atmosphere. Night all - and truly sorry to everyone at Chambers. I hope you find something else very soon.

Sorry - I wasn't very clear - I wondered where the Swan with 2 necks was.

Agree with you re the Fox - only been there a couple of times, but good each time, so maybe a return visit is due soon.

Not sure I agree with previous comments on the LP group. The Moat House is the best venue in Stafford for Weddings and serves fantastic food.
Had some really disappointing meals there to be honest.

Just on the comment of no-one in Stafford wanting to pay over £10 a meal. Why is it that the Swan is always busy for food AND always busy for drinks on Fri/Sat nights despite being far from the cheapest place in town?

I think there is a market for it in Stafford and this place proves it can be done.

That surprises me. The restaurant is better than the bar and never had anything but good food. Especially compared to the majority of places in Stafford.

The moat house restaurant is, by a country mile, the best gourmet food experience you will get in Stafford. I would say just sub Michelin starred. The bar food is just "grub" as it's been said.

Service in the restaurant is a bit below par though but you're not spending 300 quid for a meal for 2 so I guess that's where the compromise is. Strange to hear of anyone having a poor mel in the restaurant. No one I know has.

Mrs King and I have shared the same pudding at the Pen-y-Bryn, Colwyn Bay this evening and also at the Hand and Trumpet near Betley. Chambers had the same atmosphere as both of these pubs with very good food, decent service and a great selection of beers. We are really disappointed that it is has gone bust. Our thoughts go out to the staff who made the place an enjoyable place to eat and drink.

Swan with 2 necks is on the a51 in blackbrook I think? Came top in taste of Staffordshire. Ahead of Shropshire in haughton and the swan. Iirc.
